Jesus Christ... I just looked up the damage zone for the tornado. The black arrow is where my mother's house is located.

I talked to her and she's fine, she said the house is pretty much OK too. The phrase 'dodged a bullet' comes to mind.

Called my mom as the storm went over joplin. Told her that the city was gettin obliterated.
Prayers to my fellow Ozarkians.

My cousins down there workin for the RC (never woulda thought that in a million years). Sounded shell shocked.

Called the 'rents this morning and the worst went south. They didn't even get any particularly heavy rain. At least they have a basement (Which assumes they are paying attention to the warnings.)

Wow, looks like Joplin is getting pounded at this moment, at the least, very heavy rain.

I'm looking for a way to donate blood but the soonest Red Cross blood drive I can find on their website is next week. Is there a blood drive going on anywhere in the KC/JoCo area right now? I really want to help these people out.

Did anyone hear about a tornado in Noel, Mo? We are going to be there in a couple of weeks and I heard from a friend a rumor about one that hit there yesterday as well.

My co-worker is going to see if she can take the day tomorrow to go to Joplin to volunteer in the local Humane Society. She knows people are more important, but she figures they would need just as much help. If anyone is able to donate items that live near there, you might throw in a can of dog food or cat food.

That really sucks, considering how many homes have roof damage. Not what they need right now.

Haven't heard of any hitting Noel but wouldn't be surprised.

I don't have any family in Joplin, but several friends in various bands that I've played with. Prayers for everyone in the area.

I am very close to my cousin.. We grew up together, I am sure that in 3-4 days it will all come crashing down for her and her moms side of the family...

I cant imagine what people of J-mo are dealing with... JMo means so much to my wife and I for so many different reasons. Its like someone ripped our hearts out.

I have quite a few friends that I know from travelling around to dart tournaments in Missouri that live in Joplin. All but a couple have been accounted for, but one friend in particular was pretty tore up when he was walking to his girlfriend's house to check on her. She was ok, but he came across a car that a tree had fallen on. There was someone in the car so he went to see if he could help and the person was dead. He is having trouble coping, and can't get the mental image of what he saw out of his head.

We can't say enough prayers for these people, to help them survive, to help them cope. So sad...

I grew up in Ft. Scott and grandparents lived in Granby, MO(20 miles SE of Joplin) know the area very well. It's just heartbreaking for me and those I know back there.

What time did this hit? Based on the description and pictures of destruction I expect a F4 if not F5 level. But because there are sooooooooo many deaths I am assuming in the middle of the night because Midwest folks take seriously any severe T-storm with Tornado watches during the day and know how and when to take cover.

My prayers are with all in Joplin. I'm from there, but I currently live in Cali. I still have many friends and family members that live there. Most of my F&F are fine, but I still have one cousin and one former classmate that is unaccounted for. I'm hopeful that they will be okay, but news is traveling fairly slowly out of that area.

I can't believe that Joplin HS, Walmart, North Park Mall, and St. Johns got destroyed. I spent a lot of time with my friends in those places (yes, even St. John's) But those places can be rebuilt. My thoughts and prayers are with those people who have lost their loved ones and property.

I just called and the Overland Park location should be able to take you. I normally do double red blood cells and have to schedule that out a couple/few weeks. They told me they would take me whenever I could come. I think they have called in extra staff to help with collection. God bless you for making a donation. Maybe I will see you there. I am heading in around 11.

It's one thing to lose your house to a tornado(my mom's house was hit hard in '03 by that tornado that tore through the northland), but to lose your entire community? I can't fathom. Here's hoping Joplin can get restored and under control in the least amount of time humanly possible.

CNN reporting search efforts called off during storm.

Watching video of that tornado ... holy shit. It wasn't a nice, neat funnel, it was a massive cloud that just descended to the ground. A mile wide, they said? That's one of the biggest I've ever seen. And it got almost pitch black.

Found out this morning that a friend of a friend (I've met him a couple of times) survived, or at least that's what his niece said on Facebook. He used to work at that hospital, but retired a couple of years ago.

Found out late last night that a buddy of mine from high school works at that ruined hospital and lives a couple of blocks from it. I haven't talked to him for a long time, but he and my best friend are still pretty tight. His house is (was) at the bottom of a hill, and he has a basement, so hopefully he and his family got through it okay. If he did, he was a field medic back in his Army days, so I'm sure he's busy.

South Range Line was hit by a small tornado, or like a microburst/whatever in 1997 or thereabouts. I remember it leveled an auto store or something just across the street from the Drury Inn

You can do walk ins for single units I believe. You might want to call ahead and verifiy that. It has been a while since I diid single units so that might not be the case anymore.

The mall is fine, damage started around 12th right around Kings Palace and got worse and worse to the south. The others you mentioned...

From a friend/co worker who has family in Joplin posted this link on FB. I wasn't sure if it was already posted or not.

The American Red Cross has created a website where people affected by the Joplin Tornado can look to see if family members are safe.

The "Safe and Well" website allows those affected by the tornado to register into a database and record that they're alive and well. Folks can also search that data base to see if their family members have responded.

It may have. Main Street took it in the shorts pretty bad. The footage CNN has of two chasers driving down a road going "zomg everything's gone" where heading south on Main right after the storm. Had I not recognized the signage of a defunct preschool I wouldn't have caught on to that.
