Another round to hit Joplin about 8am. :shake:
|
Jesus Christ... I just looked up the damage zone for the tornado. The black arrow is where my mother's house is located.
I talked to her and she's fine, she said the house is pretty much OK too. The phrase 'dodged a bullet' comes to mind. http://i.imgur.com/K8eCM.jpg |

So what it is? 70% gone or 20-30%?
Everyone is saying something different. |

Thanks!

days like these where you need ro remember to tell those you care about just how much you love and appreciate them.
thoughts and prayers to all affected. just awful. |
Saw lots of devastation last night. I'm OK, but a friends mom is missing.
|
I have a very bad feeling the number of dead will increase greatly once they are able to get to the Walmart and Lowes and the other stores that are wiped out.

Wow, looks like Joplin is getting pounded at this moment, at the least, very heavy rain.
|
I'm looking for a way to donate blood but the soonest Red Cross blood drive I can find on their website is next week. Is there a blood drive going on anywhere in the KC/JoCo area right now? I really want to help these people out.
|
Did anyone hear about a tornado in Noel, Mo? We are going to be there in a couple of weeks and I heard from a friend a rumor about one that hit there yesterday as well.

My co-worker is going to see if she can take the day tomorrow to go to Joplin to volunteer in the local Humane Society. She knows people are more important, but she figures they would need just as much help. If anyone is able to donate items that live near there, you might throw in a can of dog food or cat food.

What about the highways? Are they open?
|
Please DO NOT SELF DEPLOY to Joplin. The area is using their emergency response plan that is in place & it is working. They cannot manage spontaneous volunteers at this time. Please call(800.427.4626) to let them know if you are interested in volunteering & they will provide a coordinated effort to manage volunteers.

Here is something to consider...
http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill...?bill=s109-517 Calendar No. 319 109th CONGRESS 1st Session S. 517 [Report No. 109-202] To establish the Weather Modification Operations and Research Board, and for other purposes. from 2005. So, they are obviously doing research into it... and the indicators show that this was most likely created or modified. I watched radar last night, and they showed 3 additional rings with a square... and now this additional storm is hitting Joplin. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mR16w...tailpage#t=94s This is a sad, sad thing... and even more sad when you think it may have been enhanced/created. Say what you will of me, I don't care. People's lives are put into harms way and someone or some organization could be behind it, and that is infuriating, to me. I have nothing but love for those effected by this. |

I just gave him an infraction for "False thread title or fake news", I feel that fell under that category nicely.

COME AT ME BRO |
I grew up in Ft. Scott and grandparents lived in Granby, MO(20 miles SE of Joplin) know the area very well. It's just heartbreaking for me and those I know back there.
What time did this hit? Based on the description and pictures of destruction I expect a F4 if not F5 level. But because there are sooooooooo many deaths I am assuming in the middle of the night because Midwest folks take seriously any severe T-storm with Tornado watches during the day and know how and when to take cover. |

My prayers are with all in Joplin. I'm from there, but I currently live in Cali. I still have many friends and family members that live there. Most of my F&F are fine, but I still have one cousin and one former classmate that is unaccounted for. I'm hopeful that they will be okay, but news is traveling fairly slowly out of that area.
I can't believe that Joplin HS, Walmart, North Park Mall, and St. Johns got destroyed. I spent a lot of time with my friends in those places (yes, even St. John's) But those places can be rebuilt. My thoughts and prayers are with those people who have lost their loved ones and property. |

It's one thing to lose your house to a tornado(my mom's house was hit hard in '03 by that tornado that tore through the northland), but to lose your entire community? I can't fathom. Here's hoping Joplin can get restored and under control in the least amount of time humanly possible.
|
I have a somewhat unusual-ish blood type. I should go donate.

CNN reporting search efforts called off during storm.

Watching video of that tornado ... holy shit. It wasn't a nice, neat funnel, it was a massive cloud that just descended to the ground. A mile wide, they said? That's one of the biggest I've ever seen. And it got almost pitch black.
Found out this morning that a friend of a friend (I've met him a couple of times) survived, or at least that's what his niece said on Facebook. He used to work at that hospital, but retired a couple of years ago. |
Some Facebook posts from the MIL...
"To all our friends and family....please pray for our fellow citizens here in Joplin. Our family is fine and we had no damage....so far...to our home...the tonado hit about a mile north of us...we heard the "freight train"...thank God we have a basement." "Electric to the water pumps must still be out and also water is running in the streets due to all the missing homes and businesses. Dad went out looking for a part to the generator but turned around and had to make his way home and said he couldn't believe what he saw." |
Wow. I'm aparently the last person on earth to hear about this. Prayers to all of you in Joplin and anyone with friends or family there.
|
Dang. I just google-mapped one of my childhood homes and it was right in the thick of the damage. I hope it survived; I have very fond memories of that place. It's obviously a third-decimal-point issue compared to the people who live there now, but you hate to lose a place with good memories.
|
Found out late last night that a buddy of mine from high school works at that ruined hospital and lives a couple of blocks from it. I haven't talked to him for a long time, but he and my best friend are still pretty tight. His house is (was) at the bottom of a hill, and he has a basement, so hopefully he and his family got through it okay. If he did, he was a field medic back in his Army days, so I'm sure he's busy.
|
Just hung up w/ Dad, he said that growing up all of the locals in BOTH Joplin and Carthage claimed that the fact that both towns are encapsulated by rivers, that they'd never cross the rivers, the indians claimed that the Tornados would not cross the rivers, consequently people believed that for yrs. Not anymore, so sad man. I can't even imagine that happening here, Dad doesn't remember a twister in Carthage at all, EVER hitting. They were usually over across the KS line toward Frontenac.

South Range Line was hit by a small tornado, or like a microburst/whatever in 1997 or thereabouts. I remember it leveled an auto store or something just across the street from the Drury Inn

From a friend/co worker who has family in Joplin posted this link on FB. I wasn't sure if it was already posted or not.
The American Red Cross has created a website where people affected by the Joplin Tornado can look to see if family members are safe. The "Safe and Well" website allows those affected by the tornado to register into a database and record that they're alive and well. Folks can also search that data base to see if their family members have responded. https://safeandwell.communityos.org/...esearch/search |
I guess it missed Fred N Reds? *exhales*
|
If someone's already posted this, I apologize. This video is really crazy...it's pulled off The Drudge Report. There's not much video, just audio of people taking cover during the tornado. Warning, it's pretty upsetting.
