3. Tyler Bray had a nice deep ball down the right sideline to receiver Robby Toma, who pulled it in as he fell to the ground. Bray also went deep to receiver Darryl Stonum, who had to slow up slightly but did make the catch. After one practice I can report Bray likes to go deep. It was just light practice stuff but he does enjoy flinging it. Bray found receiver Kendal Thompkins for a nice catch along the left sideline, balancing himself to stay in bounds.

You people really think Andy Reid isn't going to throw the ball JFC His efficiency goes down, turnovers likely up, but RRPP is dead folks.

I think Reid is going to throw the ball as much as he always has, but he will adjust to Smith's limitations and this offense will not go downfield nearly as often as we have seen from reid before.

In that offense, Smith will still be a highly efficient passer, and the Chiefs will win a lot of games.

The problem will be that teams that can play defense at a high level will take that short passing game away and this offense will struggle to move the chains, and score points.

Pasta Little Brioni 05-12-2013 07:14 AM

I think he'll certainly try to take the top off the defense more than they did in San Fran. Avery was a nice signing as it gives the team a deep threat and opens up some of those slip screens.

I think McCluster has a large role in this offense and Charles will certainly catch more balls.

I think McCluster is going to be the same guy he has always been.

He can follow blocks, but he isn't going to make anyone miss.

I don't think Jamaal Charles is going to approach 2000 yards rushing, like some think, but he'll be a big part of the passing game and will approach 2500 total yards rushing and receiving.

This.

I think this will be the most the HB has been involved in a KC offense since Priest.

If Phat Andy stays true to form Charles is a lock for 50 catches...

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Tyler Bray believes that every rookie has something to prove.
He may have more than most.

The former Tennessee quarterback left school a year early hoping he'd be chosen highly in the draft, but every team passed on him over the course of seven agonizing rounds. So he wound up signing with Kansas City as an undrafted free agent, and is now trying to make the team.
He's been participating in the Chiefs' rookie minicamp that finishes up Sunday.

Bray put up big numbers as a starter with the Vols, but questions about his maturity and some minor off-the-field incidents caused his stock to drop. Still, he had one of the biggest arms of the rookies coming out, and the Chiefs hope he can compete for a backup job.

Has Andy ever worked with douchebag QBs like this before?

I know he had Michael Vick, but that's a slightly different story. How well has he done taking a QB with all the physical gifts necessary to be an elite QB and giving him the technique, brains, and confidence to put it all together?

Like, the only example I can think of is Brett Favre, and he wasn't quite as braindead as Bray coming out of college.

I think Favre was difficult to coach coming out.

Wanted throw it into places he shouldn't even though the coaches told him not to over and over again.

I don't know if Bray is just cocky or if he's stupid.

If Bray really is stupid then there isn't much hope for him at the NFL level.

I think Favre is a good comparison for Bray.

These guys can go either way. They have tremendous talent and upside but they also can go Ryan Leaf.

Bray is well worth the cost/time considering the chance he might turn into a legit franchise level QB, however slight that might be.

Rookie Minicamp Wrap-Up: Day Three

Posted 4 hours ago

Reid Ferrin Chiefs InsiderKCChiefs.comEmail @KCChiefs_Reid

Coach Reid summarizes the next steps, following the three-day camp

The Kansas City Chiefs three-day rookie minicamp ended Sunday, followed by head coach Andy Reid addressing the media.

“First thing is first, happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers out there," coach Reid said. "We’ve all got them and they are special, so happy Mother’s Day to all. To conclude the camp, I was proud of the guys and their effort they put forward. Obviously, everybody doesn’t make that next transition into tomorrow, but they came out here, they busted their tail and a lot of them that we have to let go here, might possibly have another chance either here or somewhere else. My word to them was ‘continue to work, it is a great way to make a living,’ and so I am sure they will do that. For the guys that do make it, we are starting back up tomorrow. Rookies can be here, and then we start phase three on Tuesday, so tomorrow will be phase two, kind of like what we have been doing the last couple weeks. Tuesday we will get into phase three....where we have a practice very similar to what we had today."

After the three days of practice, coach Reid and his entire staff will continue with the evaluation process, leaving no stone unturned.

“Well, really you get two walkthroughs and you get three practices," coach Reid said.

"You want to do the best you can. We gave the kids a lot of reps. You do the best you can off of film study and how they take your coaching that you are able to give them. Our coaches, it doesn’t matter whether you were the first pick or a college free agent, we don’t care, we are going to coach them all the same. We have a chance to see how they pick it up and then we make our decision. Does that mean that the kids that you let go don’t have a chance? No, some of them are going to have an opportunity somewhere else, but you do the best you can.”

During the three-day camp, a lot was asked of the players, testing their work habits both on the field and in the classroom.

“Yeah, we throw a lot of words at them," coach Reid said. "It is like learning French overnight. It gradually gets better and everything slows down for them just a bit. Today it was a red zone emphasis and we got a lot of work in there. The other days were our base and nickel plays, so today they got a good look at the red zone stuff.”

The Chiefs rookies were prepared to absorb anything and everything thrown their way.

"You can do a lot in three days, especially when you’re practicing twice a day," Chiefs rookie Eric Kush said. "We can install the plays and learn them through practice, day one, and then clean them up through practice, day two; you can get a lot out of three days. You’d be surprised how much you can learn as a rookie in three days."

One of the guys picking things up quickly is top pick Eric Fisher, whose performance all three days impressed coach Reid.

“Eric, I thought he looked smooth," coach Reid said. "Every day he was a little bit better. You saw him become a little bit more comfortable at that spot. You can tell his athletic abilities. He is smooth, he is a big man that can move and bend. He can do it and move.”

As for the players who are still looking for a job, coach Reid said he anticipates signing a few tryout players.

“Yeah, I think we will, but I have to get with Dorse [John Dorsey] and see," coach Reid stated. "But he had his guys out here, the three days, evaluating them and watching tape. He is meeting with them now, so I will see where that goes.”

During practices and minicamps, you always see guys who tend to stand out, possibly earning future reps and more; coach Reid highlighted a few of those standout guys on Sunday.

“Tyler Bray had a nice day today; I think that is obvious," coach Reid said. "He made some nice throws down in the red zone. He has to continue to make progress, but he did some nice things. It was good to see [Sanders] Commings work at safety. He played a little bit of corner but was primarily at safety. It was nice to see the progress that he made as he went on. We feel like he can still play corner but that gives us the flexibility to play that free safety position."

Tyler Bray was pleased with his minicamp performance but far from satisfied.

"It’s a great feeling but we’re all rookies here," Bray said of coach Reid's compliments. "If it was with the veterans, it might have been a little better, but I just have to keep working; I have to learn from Alex (Smith) and have him help me out."
Meanwhile, coach Reid's compliments of Sanders Commings seem to indicate that the rookie achieved his pre-camp goals.

"Just to impress the coaches mentally and physically, to show them how fast I can pick up the playbook and show them how well I can play on the field," Commings said.

He did just that.

As the players concluded practice, they headed for the cafeteria, where salad, pizza, pasta, beef brisket, fruit, water, Gatorade and much more were waiting.

Rookies will be in for some meetings on Monday, before the team's phase three of the offseason conditioning program begins on Tuesday.

KC is the perfect place to be for a developmental QB right now. His undrafted status should make him work harder than he probably has in years. I hope his brain can keep up.

He wasn’t drafted at all, dropping all the way through to rookie free agency. That made for a rather uncomfortable three-day experience.

“It’s not your choice,’’ said Bray, who eventually signed with the Chiefs and is participating in this weekend’s rookie camp. “You’re not the one sitting around in the draft room picking, so you just wait around. If you don’t get drafted, you pick up the phone and try to find a team and I found a team here in Kansas City.”

Based on ability alone, Bray should have been drafted. He displayed a strong arm at the rookie camp, which concludes today, and at 6-feet-6 and 232 pounds has the classic size that NFL teams look for in a quarterback.

He didn’t get drafted because of a lack of maturity and work habits that were sometimes sloppy. Bray said he may have stayed at Tennessee for his final season had he known he wouldn’t be drafted.

“Who knows?’’ he said. “I’m here now and I’m just trying to move forward.

“I knew I was going to have to earn my way regardless of if I got drafted or not. I’m just looking forward to playing and hopefully learning the system.”

The Chiefs seem to think they got a bargain in Bray by signing him after the draft. He is clearly the most gifted of the three quarterbacks participating in rookie camp, Dayne Crist of Kansas and Alex Gillett of Eastern Michigan being the others.

Bray is the only one among the group under contract to the Chiefs. Crist and Gillett are at camp on a trial basis and the Chiefs, who also have Alex Smith, Chase Daniel and Ricky Stanzi, appear to have no room for another quarterback.

Bray would appear to have an excellent chance to make the regular season roster. Smith and Daniel are the top two quarterbacks with Bray and Stanzi having a shot at the third spot.

Stanzi will have his chance to make his statement to new coach Andy Reid when the Chiefs continue with full squad practices beginning on Tuesday. Bray was making his early move at rookie camp.

“He just needs to continue to improve,’’ Reid said. “That’s what he needs to do, learn the offense, handle it the right way and do the right things. He understands that. He knows the places where he made mistakes at Tennessee. But he also knows he’s a pretty good football player.

“It’s important he learns our system and takes positive steps forward and not negative steps backward.’’

Chiefs safety Sanders Commings, a fifth-round draft pick from Georgia, played against Bray in college. He said he was surprised Bray didn’t get drafted.

“I thought he would be a top-three round guy,’’ Commings said. “This draft this year was pretty crazy, only two quarterbacks in the first two rounds. It was an unfortunate year for the quarterbacks in the draft. I’m glad he’s a Chief. He’s a tremendous athlete, a tremendous quarterback.’’

NFL teams evidently believed Bray’s negatives outweighed his potential.

“I made a lot of mistakes at Tennessee,’’ said Bray, who wouldn’t elaborate. “I had a lot of off the field issues and that could have had something to do with it. Stupid mistakes. I’m here now and I’m a free agent. That’s OK with me. I’m just here to play football.

“Every rookie in the draft has got to prove something. We all knew we weren’t going to come in and start. I’m going coming in to battle. I’m going to try to learn from Alex (Smith). He’s a veteran quarterback and I’m going to try to learn a lot from him.”

Apparently he had a hand in Brett Favre's turnaround.

Favre was a mess in Atlanta...took a few years in GB before he started getting it.

I like this quote because he knew regardless if drafted or not that he would have to work his butt off and nothing was going be given to him in the NFL. There could be hope for him.

This is looking better as each day passes. I know he's an UDFA but he's the most exciting rookie UDFA I've ever seen. On the chiefs anyway.
