Little white ramekin for small sides, big brown ramekin for big sides. EDIT - Looks like it's still the standard https://media-cdn.tripadvisor.com/me...aked-beans.jpg https://danvfood.files.wordpress.com...6/img_0226.jpg |
I had no idea what a ramekin was. I had to look it up. Learn something new every day

Is that showing up in KC now? I've heard good things, but haven't tried it. https://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/...recipe-1943078 EDIT: looks like it. <iframe width="854" height="480" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/yPwFZZplzwQ" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe> |

If you live in Kansas City, and tell me Gates is your favorite bbq, I automatically disregard anynfuether opinions from you.
|
Quote:
Depends on the specific meats, sauces or sides you're in the mood for, or even whether you're in the mood for the food or the setting. For instance, KCJoes for brisket and NotLSauce. Jackstack for beans and lamb ribs. Q39 for chicken. LCs for fries. |

But "rabblerouser's smokehouse" should be #1AA. |
You know you're surrounded by world class bbq options when you order the chicken in KC. I love me some smoked chicken, but the bbq is so shitty here that when I walk into Q39 while back in KC later this month, maybe if there's any room leftover after all the beef and pork have been crushed, I might finally look towards the chicken.
I'd probably eat Zarda once every couple months if they were here. |

Best BBQ joint in KC area?

I can honestly say that I have never eaten chicken or lamb at a BBQ joint. Load me up on pork & beef. |

I'm thinking of trying out Q39 today for the first time. Other than pulled pork and brisket, what else is recommended?
|
I like Bryant’s ribs the best
Q39 is solid everywhere but I think has become a bit overrated |

Gates blows ass sideways.
Went there for years because it had been ingrained in me since I was a kid that "It's Gates!"....but after I was grown I sort of thought it sucked. Then took a 10 year hiatus, and one day after a Royals game on the way home the wife and I for some reason were wanting to try it again. the 103rd & State Line Location. Ate it, and immediately thought "yep...still sucks". Haven't been back since, and that was probably 9 or 10 years ago. LMAO. of all the bbq staples of KC, that one is easily the worst IMO. Sauce is good I suppose. I'm not suggesting there are 100's of better bbq options around town, just saying it's very very overrated IMO (as are a lot of the BBQ mainstays in kc). and when I want BBQ, it's probably the last place that will come to mind. The best bbq seems to come from hole in the wall places that are scattered all throughout town. i don't go out to eat for BBQ very often, mainly due to lack of consistency, flavor, and prices. But if I'm going, I'm going to Jack Stack. it might not be the "Best" etc, but it's been the same / really good every time I've been there for 20 years. I need to try Slaps, however. I need to try Q39. -Woodyard - eh...wasn't bad, wasn't great. Pretty unmemorable. -OK Joes - I like it. -K&M in Spring Hill - used to have a good sammich; but last time I went there was a $3 'upcharge' on a sammich that had beef on it. WTF. Haven't been there in a while. -The Little Pig in Belton - been years since I've been, but I remember it being pretty tasty (not even sure if it's still there). -Wabash bbq in Excelsior is pretty good; though, the only thing I've had is a sammich and fries there when we stop off on a bike ride. -Zarda - it's good if you like smoked lunch meat; because that's what their sammiches taste like. |
Q39 was pretty ****ing good. Had the judges plate with spare ribs, brisket, and pulled pork. Fries and slaw were both good too. Only thing is the sauce was spicy for my tastes but I'm sure most people prefer it that way, so meh.

I'm watching 'Smoked' and one of the contestants owns Slap's BBQ. What's the word on Slap's?

Woodyard has the best smoked chicken. It's not even BBQ really, its hickory smoked chicken, much like what Stephenson's Apple Orchard Restaurant used to have before it closed down.
There's few "joints" that you can go wrong with in KC. They've all got great BBQ. |

I agree about the cheddar jalapeno sausage. Their cheesy potatoes are the best too.
|
Joe's KC but mostly because I can walk there
|
Sauto swears by it yet don't tell him he's dead on. It is the best Q in KC in my opinion also.
I enjoy the overall dining experience at Jack's so I eat there more often. Slaps has a lot to be desired in the overall experience but the protein is excellent. Heres a Wired BBQ tour of Slaps <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/VyKfIuvye_w" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
The family did Q39 last week. OMG. So good. All other BBQ is a sham compared to this. The brisket tasted like chocolate. Delish.
|
I had LCs again the other day. Still not very good. No effing clue how you could even start comparing that in the same sentence as Joes or Q39 Gates sucks too but Im not a sauce guy and as I understand it sauce people love their sauce so maybe thats why. Third in KC is hard to pon point but it might be Zarda

I forgot about Q39, I guess I should try it again (the OP location) when in town next time.

I'll give you the Gates/sauce thing. But LC's is pretty damn good and Zarda's is subpar for KC (still would be top 5 BBQ in LA). LC's burnt ends might be the best I've had. |

My stepdad got me into the Poor Russ and then the French Dip at jackstack. I feel bad for not ordering BBQ but that French Dip might be the best thing on their menu.

I really only like the burnt ends. But they are amazing.

I have to agree....My Wife is not a huge fan of BBQ - but she LOVES Joe's ribs. :thumb: |
I am not up to speed of some of the new Q joints in KC. I will need to do some research on next trip to KC
|
I just finished up with three bones and a quarter of smoked chicken from Slap's. This was not my first time there as I live only a couple of minutes away, but possibly my first time commenting on them. I will admit to not being a huge fan of their sauces. The spicy is decent but not great. The sweet, well I don't care much for sweet bbq sauce to begin with so it was in the negative column before I ever tried it. And honestly I don't like to use a lot of sauce to begin with. Just a touch of a good sauce to accentuate the smoked meat is all that is required. It does not need to be smothered in it. If it does it is not a very good smoked meat. Anyway, the meats are on point. Both ribs and chicken were perfectly smoked. And their warm potato cassarole is always a treat. If you haven't made your way up to the Strawberry Hill in a while (or ever) you should come up and check out the place. Hell, hit me up and we can do lunch or dinner and we can grab a couple of drinks, or ten, at the local bars. I am always down for a CP meeting. Sadly they are not as common as they used to be. But Slaps is worth a visit wether we meet up or not.

There's some cool looking spots in that area.
I popped into the sausage place a couple weeks ago |

There was an article in The Pitch this past week or two about this area. I still haven't read it, but now that I am thinking about it I will. Apperantly it named a place or two that frequent. I'll go read it and probably post the link to it afterwards. |

OK, good article hitting some, but not all of the hot spots on the Hill. And in keeping with the topic of the thread they lead with their write up on Slap's.
Breit's is my go to. But Johniie's is where I had a couple of cocktails this afternnon before swinging by Slpa's for my dinner. https://www.thepitchkc.com/food-drin...lEHMFHoLRjMyFY |
I love me a good Reuben sandwich.

Zardas is waaaaaaay overrated. |
One thing that's weird is once you get outside of the KC metro...there's not many good bbq places. When I lived in Lawrence there were surprising few good places. Vermont St was good but that was the only place I remember going to more than once.
When I lived in Newton and McPherson there was nothing. Maybe we're just spoiled in KC. |

Danny Edwards - Big D sandwich. Insane. Pisses me off so bad that he closes for Xmas every year when I come back. |
Speaking of ribs, and not relying on sauce, Moms chose Brobeck's for her most recent B-day dinner. IIRC, my sis had her work bring some in for an office lunch one day, leading to the recommendation.
All seemed pleasantly surprised, and everyone's eyes widened when they tried their ribs. They rely on their meat and don't even 'offer' a BBQ sauce. They have it, but they were clearly an afterthought, and the prominently also offer competitors sauces. . . KC Masterpiece X-tra Hot, Curley's Sweet and Smoky, etc. And they say on the menu to feel free to bring in your own sauce from home if you like something better. In addition to great ribs, they have some unique things to recommend them. They have a smoked ham salad. The day we were there, they had a really really good smoked jalapeno cheddar long sausage. They do a good job on cheesy corn. Great onion rings. etc. https://brobecksbbq.com/ I wouldn't put them on the highest level with Joe's KC, but they are a credit to the KC BBQ scene. A pleasant surprise, without all the hassle of being the 'go to' place at present. If you get a craving for that smoke ham salad, that's the only place to get it. And their ribs are good enough to elicit a smile and a moan or two. |
Rib tips from LCs

I liked the ribs but really disliked the brisket. Seemed more like roast than brisket. I much prefer the thin sliced brisket at Zarda and Zarda original is my favorite sauce. Usually get a pound to go as there is not much else there I like that well. Get Jacks BBQ beans to go as well. |

The only place near my house is Dicks and it is pretty sad. I've hunted a little bit for BBQ in San Francisco and have been disappointed so far. |

Definitely not great BBQ, but it’s ok. |
Danny Edwards was originally located where the Sprint Center is now. They were a daytime only restaurant, dinky place with only a few seats. Their slogan was "Eat It And Beat It." Now they're on Southwest Boulevard right next to Ponak's. Their BBQ is very good, but my biggest gripe is they are still a daytime only business. Lunch only, not open for dinner. That's just the way they do it. Their sauce is a coffee colored spicy sauce. Unique and very tasty.

The only Gates that's still quality is the one on Cleaver II/47th.
I was a Bryant's man (18th and Brooklyn only) for most of my life, but it's gone to shit. LC's is still pretty good; inconsistent but lower ceiling, but higher floor. The Mitch Trubisky of KC BBQ. LOL. Joe's is very consistent across the board. Sad, but it's probably true that it's overall the best these days. I usually grab Gates to go from the aforementioned spot when I want BBQ because I live nearby. |
I'd love to smash one of those sandwiches right now. Looks delicious.
|
I've tried twice to get into Little Miss BBQ out here in Phoenix and both times the wait was over two hours.
One of the highest rated BBQ places in the US. I think I'll do a pre-order next time and this thread is making my craving skyrocket. |
My personal favorite in KC is 1. Jack Stack in Martin City followed closely by Q39

I ate a Joe’s in Overland Park last time I was in KC. Overrated? I thought the brisket was really good.

Just got back from Danny Edwards BBQ. I had the "Monday Special" (1 sandwich + 1 side) pulled pork sandwich and fries for only $6.99. It was tasty, and I feel like I got my money's worth.
