I should start a "Geno Smith vs. Peyton Manning - It's On" thread. Since that's the standard we've set now. Someone get on it.

Just illustrating how the first few games of a quarterbacks career mean much less than some might think.

10 turnovers in 4 games is a staggering total, but you can't make it more than it is.

He has had flashes of brilliance and stretches of cluelessness...how he works through it is what will make him a 13 year starter or out of the league in 5.

If you Geno lovers wanted to wait to judge Geno's career maybe you shouldn't have made this thread or continue to comment in this thread. If you come here and comment "See we should've taken Geno!!!!!" every single time he completes a pass you're just asking for people to call you an idiot whenever he screws up, which he's done quite a bit so far in his young career.

BossChief 09-29-2013 06:33 PM

I didn't realize I started this thread and that it only covers the first couple games of this season.

I guess I was assuming this is a 5 year thread, as it says it is in the op.

You may also want to notice that I didn't even vote either way.

I'd agree it's not the end of the world yet... but just because Peyton Manning did it doesn't mean Geno will. It literally has 0% relevance.

The record for most interceptions in a season since the merger is 35 (Vinny Testaverde) but I can't seem to find what the record for turnovers in a season would be.

Geno vs Ryan Leaf would be closer to the truth if we are talking standards.

0 Some franchises will be patient and let a franchise QB develop. It may sucks for a few years, but can pay huge dividends in the long run. The Titans were patient with Locker and it was starting to pay off this year until he got hurt. It sucks that he got hurt, but I'm thrilled we missed seeing him.

I don't know how patient the Jets will be. Then again, they were patient with Sanchez, but he won early on in his career. If they have a losing season with Geno and he's a turnover machine all year, they might go in a different direction. Who ****ing knows anymore in this league. Dude could turn out to be a stud, or could end up flipping burgers.

I don't know about the Jets, but Donovan McNabb was 810 this morning swinging from Geno's nuts. There is potential there you ride it out. The Jets aren't winning the SB this year no matter who they play at QB on their roster.

You're talking about NY being patient? Jets fans I know have seen enough.
Geno will never develop, he just doesn't have it in him. People that get paid to analyze these sorts of things thought the same.

Yeah, the same franchise that was patient with Sanchez. The same city that was patient for 4 years as Eli Manning developed.

People that get paid to do this have made many mistakes. Wilson and Kaepernick just being the latest ones.

Sanchez won out of the gate. NY had far too much invested in Eli and fans were calling for his head, they weren't patient. Oh and the characteristics that scouts are looking were evident with Eli, I guess not so much with Geno.

NY is not a patient town. And the "some franchises are patient enough to allow a rookie qb to develop" only happens if they are confident in the players ability to develop, they are not. Jets took a flyer because they had few to no other options. It hasn't paid off, the fans are not confident in it ever paying off and the one's that anticipated this will continue getting a paycheck.

The Jets won in spite of Sanchez out of the gate. The Jets were also supposed to be a dumpster fire this year regardless of the QB and right now they are 2-2 and while Geno has turned it over too many times he shown flashes of being a very good downfield passer. He is on pace to set the NFL record for turnovers for a QB. LMAO.

Its going to be HILARIOUS when he finally gets benched for B. Quinn

It's too early to say if he's going to be "particularly impressive" much less great, yes. He's hit and miss/off and on obviously. He's not very consistent and it's obvious that he's forcing plays.

He is Ryan Leaf. It isn't about not drafting a QB in the first round, and I don't know why you simpletons can't get that through your thick skulls. It is about not drafting an obviously crappy QB in the first round--esp at 1.1. Drafting a QB in the first round just to draft a QB in the first round is a quick ticket to becoming the Cleveland Browns.

Geno Smith tells the defense he's sorry

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- After the 38-13 loss to the Tennessee Titans, rookie quarterback Geno Smith apologized to the New York Jets defense.

“I felt I owed the defense an apology,” Smith said. “They worked their butts off to be one of the best in the league and they pride themselves on not giving up points but whenever you turn the ball over and they lead to scores -- And they bailed us out time and time again so far – but whenever you turn it over that many times it’s hard or those guys to go out there and do their jobs when it’s a short field. Just wanted to talk to those guys and let them know I was aware of my mistakes and I wanted to clean them up and I will clean them up.”

Asked what his motivation was in making the apology, Smith implied it was about the qualities that make a strong leader.

“It’s just taking ownership to your mistakes and manning up,” Smith said. “I think guys respect that more than anything.”

Brady Quinn has been inactive for the first few games of the season, but the Jets have not put in backup Matt Simms during the games in which Smith has struggled. Jets coach Rex Ryan said he is sticking with Smith for now, and the veteran Quinn can empathize with Smith’s situation.

“I think he’s going through what a rookie goes through,” Quinn said. “You’ve got some things you do great and some things you don’t do as well as you’d like but when it comes down to it it’s a team game so especially at the quarterback position there are a lot of things that can affect your job.”

Quinn said any questions about whether he could be activated were better directed to Ryan and general manager John Idzik, but he said he is familiar with the playbook.

For now though, Smith’s position is safe, though he doesn’t feel that way.

“I mean in this league, if you don’t get it done, there’s a guy — they’ll find a guy,” Smith said. “I’m not particularly worried about what anyone else is doing other than being myself and taking care of my job. I know if I take care of the ball, if I put us in good situations, we’ll have a good chance. That’s all I really focus on.”

And he doesn’t have to apologize for doing that.

Yeah, Ryan Leaf would have pissed all over the rest of the team. Geno is going to be a good one.

They absolutely refuse to acknowledge this or any other logic.

Being a rookie absolves him of ANY responsibility for his garbage play as well.

But that won't stop them from saying Fisher is a failure.

Yes, the ability to say "I'm sorry I suck" is a quality most top QB's have.

Most teams have implemented a mock apology scenario they put potential QB draft picks through at the combine now.

LMAO Because playing RT and QB in the National Football League is the same thing.
