Only 4 men were rushing and obviously, we had 5 guys blocking. Albert had his hands on Barwin, and at the same time, Charles was slipping out of the backfield into the flat right off the edge of Albert and Barwin. And for some reason, Albert hesitated like he was expecting something else to happen on the play. I don't know if he was expecting a chip block out of Charles and then Charles release to the flat or what, but the play really looks strange on Alberts part. Should have been an easy block without that complete hesitation move.

It appeared ot me that Barwin suckered him, moving at half speed, and Albert stopped moving his feet, at which time Barwin put on a burst of speed and caught Albert flatfooted.

Mental error, and failure to use proper technique.

Have to keep your feet moving, even if you feel comfortable with your position.

Could have been, but Charles been right in the area made the play look like he was expecting a chip block from Charles to decoy the LB's a bit.

PRACTICE OBSERVATIONS

August 20th - 10:20 AM

The Chiefs final River Falls hurrah will be a quiet one. A closed Minnesota focused walk-thru is about to begin.

Some of the focus will likely be on situational scenarios, a major point of emphasis from Haley and his staff this training camp. The Chiefs saw two key situations present themselves last weekend against the Texans with a hurry-up field goal opportunity to close the first half and a two-minute drill, down six points, with no timeouts at end the game.

Now if the Chiefs win this Friday all the excuses will be that it was because they game planned for the Vikes.

1:30:07 pm QB Matt Cassel said that one reason the Chiefs offense has struggled in preseason is because coaches and players are working to discover what type of offense they will be. "(The coaches) are throwing a lot at us, trying to see what we can handle. We're trying to see: 'Are we going to be a running team or a passing team?' We're still trying to find our identity."

1:25:22 pm Chiefs QB Matt Cassel on his progress in the last week of camp: "There are good days and there are bad days, but all in all I feel comfortable with where I'm at. There's a lot of things you learn from the preseason as far as the offense goes -- what routes will work against different coverages and stuff like that. It's a process."

1:18:40 pm Continuing bad weather in western Wisconsin forced Chiefs coach Todd Haley to change the schedule for Thursday, the team's final practice day in Wisconsin. In hopes of staying ahead of more rain and thunderstorms that are in the area, a walk-through practice to prepare for Friday night's preseason game against Minnesota was moved from the afternoon to the morning.

Cassel Says Offense Seeks Identity
August 20, 2009 - Bob Gretz | No Comments

From River Falls, Wisconsin

Rain has put a damper on the last days of 2009 Chiefs training camp here in the northwoods. Luckily, most of the heavy lifting for the week was already done and all that was left to do was final preparations for Friday night’s pre-season game against the Vikings over in Minneapolis.

The Chiefs will leave Wisconsin with questions about their offense, which has been unproductive and inefficient to date. On Thursday, QB Matt Cassel said that one of the things slowing down the development on his side of the ball is the search for just what the Chiefs approach will be on offense

“They are throwing a lot at us as a team, trying to see what we can handle offensively,” Cassel said. “We are trying to see what we are going to be. Are we going to be a running team? Or are we going to be a passing team? … We are still trying to find our identity.”

Cassel’s performance has been up and down as well, but he said he feels like progress has been made.

“There are some good days and there are some bad days, but all in all I feel comfortable with where I’m at,” Cassel said. “There’s a lot of things you learn from the pre-season as far as the offense goes, what routes will work against different coverages and stuff like that. It’s a process.”

That’s a favored word these days around the Chiefs: process. Todd Haley uses it often in talking about his team and especially his offense.

“I think we just have to continue to get better. It’s a process, this whole thing is a process although we might be leaving here in a couple of days camp is going to continue. It’s just going to continue in a different venue. I don’t know how many days we have left now but I’m guessing in the mid to high-20s where we’re going to be able to continue to go out and practice and continue to install and try to find our identity.

“It’s a process and right now we’re heading into our second pre-season game and I expect every position to continue to improve and get better.”

Haley said on Thursday that he expects his first team offense and defense to play through the first half, with some exceptions. He also thinks the set up for this game against the Vikings is a great opportunity for his team.

“There are certain places that you play in the pre-season that are excellent,” said Haley. “Green Bay is one because you always knew it would be a regular season type atmosphere. But Minnesota being indoors and all the excitement surrounding (Brett) Favre, the fans will obviously be excited. It’s a game I’m looking forward too. We will get a lot out of it.”
