Alex Smith doesn't have the arm to play in Buffalo. That leaves the Chiefs and Raiders. The Chiefs essentially were bidding against them self and got suckered.

You know, you have a really good point. The trick is we'll never know why we overpaid so much for Smith. Either there was a serious rival (Raiders seem likely) or they were completely duped.

Smith was the best player available.

At least, that's what cdcox's software has foretold me in secret.

Ha! That was awesome. Well done, sir.

Smith is a considerable upgrade over Cassel. But that doesn't take much and shouldn't be the standard for comparison by anyone with more sanity than Chris666.

Smith appears to be more than a slight upgrade to Cassel, based on statistics (as well as intangibles).

I should probably clarify -- I'm arguing that Cassel was horrible. Horrible, horrible. Smith isn't perfect, but he's quite a bit better than Cassel.

Career wise their stats are virtually identical. And I agree with you Cassel was and still is horrible. Alex Smith is a better QB because he doesn't turn the ball over, but he still has the same limitations Cassel does. That stat they showed last night about 75% of his passes were 10 yds or less sums it up.

He doesn't throw picks, but he also can't find WRs.

Joe Flacco's accuracy percentage on deep balls is 22.6%, worst in the league

But at least he goes deep /Clay

Take his ridiculous contract out of play and I'd take him over Alex.

with the pressure he would get in KC, Flacco would be worthless.

So would Bray

We need mobility in our QB right now because our OLine sucks so much ass.

Flacco is having a poor year and needs to play better.

Comparing Alex to guys who are playing crappy does him no favors.

Or just somebody with competence in throwing the ball.

Ideally, it would have been great to acquire Smith for an actual reasonable price, and drafted Geno and sat him for a year. Chiefs were either panicked about the QB position, or completely sure Alex Smith was everything other than what he appeared to be. Either way they overpaid to the point of eliminating other possible options.

Geno is a dime a dozen.

I mean, that is the alternative.

The Chiefs offense as a whole, outside of Charles, is average, to below average, by position.

No it isn't the alternative. The alternative to taking a sack is to throw the ball away. Something he never seems to do under pressure. Take for example the end of the first half, he feels pressure and takes a sack. After that atrocious play, Smith then feels pressure and proceeds to run 25 yards for no reason instead of throwing the ball towards the end zone.

Alex Smith is below average.

I'm glad we are comparing our "franchise" guy to quarterbacks that are struggling and saying "atleast he's not as bad as this guy!"
