Michigan sees KU team as trash talkers after last night:

Michigan's McGary rewards Withey's trash talk with big effort

By MARK SNYDER AND MICK MCCABE
Detroit Free Press

ARLINGTON, Texas — Before they lay down to sleep in their Dallas hotel room Thursday night, Mitch McGary threw one last thought to his best friend.

"Did you hear what he said about me?" McGary asked, referring to Kansas center Jeff Withey, a third-team All-American who was described by many as the potential game-changer in Friday's regional semifinal. "He said I wasn't excited about his height, I didn't think anything about his height. I expect to dominate him."

Glenn Robinson III looked back and gave the only answer he could: "We'll show him."

McGary, the freshman, made Withey, the senior, pay for the disrespect with 25 points and 14 rebounds in 35 minutes in Michigan's 87-85 overtime win over Kansas.

Withey had just 12 points and eight rebounds, only impacting the game with his five blocks and getting schooled by a freshman.

"It's the NCAA tournament," McGary said after the game. "I'm not going to back down against anybody."

Robinson was not surprised by McGary, who has now carried Michigan through three tournament games as the best player and saved the Wolverines in Friday's first half.

"When he stays aggressive like that and attacks like that, who knows what this kid can do?" Robinson said.

It was the right time.

"With this atmosphere, this stage, the Sweet 16, you're not going to get any better unless you're in the Final Four and that's what we're trying to do," McGary said.

The Wolverines looked to be in serious trouble at halftime. Why? Because little-used Spike Albrecht had outscored teammate Trey Burke, 3-0.

"That's not a good sign, but he killed in the second half," Albrecht said of Burke. "We knew he wasn't going to have two bad halves. He was in the first half kind of observing, taking what the defense gave him. He just needed to be more aggressive and he went off in the second half."

LOW BLOW: Elijah Johnson was whistled for a flagrant foul less than two minutes into the game when he hit McGary in the, uh, sensitive man-area.

"They said I had a flagrant, I guess I hit him," Johnson said. "He dropped and they hit me with a technical."

GUARDING TREY: Kevin Young, 6-foot-8, had switched onto the 6-foot Trey Burke just before Burke buried his three-point shot far beyond the three-point line to send the game into overtime.

"I knew he could shoot from that far out," Young said. "I did a horrible job stepping out on the screen. I didn't contest it as well as I should have."

Nik Stauskas on Burke's shot: "It was an unbelievable shot. That's Trey Burke for you. He's one of the best players in this country and that's a big-time shot that he hit."

"He pulled up really deep. He was a good 7 or 8 feet from the three-point line. I wasn't expecting him to shoot from that far. Just the trajectory of the ball, it looked good from the time he released it."

Too many KU supporters that I'm friends with to talk any shit to the half dozen douchebags.

Nzoner 03-30-2013 12:54 PM

It's pretty damn bad when as a Mizzou fan all I have to cheer for is a KU loss but I had a great time last night at a Missouri bar,the place erupted with claps and cheers when the beakers choked. LMAO

LMAO

Self is the reason they got as far as they did. Yeah, he should have pulled EJ late down the stretch of regulation, and certainly should have sat his ass in OT, but come on.

It's just pissed off fans lashing out. Happens to every fan everywhere when their team loses.

I started watching the game when the score was 68-54 with about 7 minutes left which was actually the only time I watched any part of a Kansas basketball game all year. Was the shot to the nuts intentional?

Well, in the gif you never see EJ stop suddnely with that "Oh shit, bro! I'm sorry" reaction, nor does he even turn his head to look at the guy.

I'd say it was intentional, and I'd say EJ is a bitch.
