The scene where Luke charges out of hiding, attacks Vader and backs him across the room is the apex of the entire series. I remember sitting in the theater gape-jawed the first time I saw it.

Unfortunately, it was all mixed up with the killer teddy bear horseshit. :#

And for all the punks who think the special effects in the original Star Wars suck, you have no idea how groundbreaking they were at the time. You're all spoiled by CGI and take it all for granted, but that movie changed everything. The thrill of watching the opening scene in dark theater as a little kid lost in wide-eyed wonder is something you'll never experience, and it's your loss.

Brought up that Temple of Doom had it's dark tone and subject matter because Lucas had so much luck with it [as the 2nd in a trilogy] in the SW series [ie, ToD was supposed to be the 'Empire Strikes Back' of the series], while Speilberg wanted to continue in the B-Movie/serial vein.

As I noted earlier, the plan wasn't to do a "darker" Indy film. It happened because Lucas was going through a terrible divorce, hence the "ripping out of hearts" by the main baddie.

His uncomfortable-ness was tailor made for Shattered Glass, though.

I was just about to say I thought he was quite good in Shattered Glass.

"I wasn't really okay with that, I kind of resisted it. But George was tenacious that he wanted the second one to be dark, and I feared it wouldn't be commercial enough. And it wasn't as commercial as the first one and the third one. But it was an important thing that he wanted to do, and I certainly deferred to George's better judgment because he had seen this three-movie arc and this is what he wanted to do and I was his director for hire."
