According to Mike Reiss of the Boston Globe (soon to be of ESPN), the Lions claimed O'Connell.

What? Is that for real, or just a comment on how good he is? I'd hate like hell to lose him. We'd be back to that idiot who took over for Borges for a little while. He sucked, though he at least wasn't completely biased like Borges. Can't remember his name now, though I think he covers the Sox now.

Lions claimed QB Kevin O'Connell off waivers from the Patriots.
We imagine many teams put in waiver bids, but the 0-16 Lions had first priority. O'Connell, the Pats' third-round pick in 2008, offers good athleticism and above average arm strength, but his accuracy is poor. He'll be a candidate for the final roster if Drew Stanton goes on injured reserve.

It's for real. ESPN is going 'local' in some areas.

caplannflHad the Lions not claimed O'Connell, he was going to the Browns. They had the second claim position is my understanding. http://bit.ly/1 ...

It's kind of mystifying as to why Belichick didn't trade O'Connell. I'm sure he could've talked someone out of a 7th rounder; I mean, the guy was a 3rd round pick two seasons back. Weird.

Only 4 teams bothered putting in a claim.

According to PFT, the Chiefs didn't put in a claim for O'Connel.
