As much as I would like this to be true. Those dudes look like cheaters.

Amazing it was in such good shape.

Why wouldn't they do this sort of thing in the salt flats?

As soon as people tell me they think better in inches than metric (talking scopes) I kind of check out of the conversation.

My brain melts down when dudes try to do the math of adjustment in MOA at various distance. It's so simple but people can complicate it in a hurry.

I gave up trying to explain MOA and Mil to these guys a long time ago. I prefer mil after starting with MOA scopes. Really not much difference when it comes down to it.

When someone has a mildot recticle and MOA adjustments I just shake my head.

Yeah, I checked a plate at about 1200 yards with my MOA 454SS EFI 3.14.

Hell of a round and gun.

After thinking about this, it seems the big problem is rifling and bullet spin over that range. I can only imagine that the bullet is like an unpredictable knuckle ball after its initial energy dissipates.

Stewie 10-07-2022 07:05 PM

This "record" is complete bullshit.

There is no way that little gun can produce the incredible energy and bullet spin to hit a target 4.4 miles away.

These guys are liars and cheats. I guess they're getting their 15 minutes of fame.

Like the fishing tournament where they stuffed their catch with lead sinkers and cut up fish.

I suppose it was possible but they used a bunch of spotters with the long-distance shooting association who monitors it all. The old world record was 4 miles done in Texas in heat and humidity. These fellows broke in in Wyoming at elevations of 7000 feet above sea level they even admit the Texans had tougher conditions.

Did they clamp the rifle into place? I find it hard to believe they used a prone/bipod or even bench arrangement.

If It's clamped into place, it basically turns into a small human operated artillery piece. Walk the shots in with radio support and pray for the perfect, lucky shot.

With 24.5 seconds of free fall to account for, how high above the target did they have to aim? (You know, cause vectors operate independently of each other and all that physics crap).

Monticore 10-08-2022 09:42 AM

A buddy of mine who is a retired JTF-2 said it took about 9 seconds bullet travel if I remember correctly for the longest recorded kill which was around 3500m , 24s would seem long I guess but that math is way beyond me . Still cool stuff even for non gun enthusiasts like me , my BIL had a chance to shoot his work gun , just not on full auto but still cool.

2500ft

Never mind. you were probably looking for mils. I don't know about that one.

The gear

Cartridge: .416 Barrett
Bullet: Cutting Edge MTAC 422-grain
Stock: Cadex Dual Strike Chassis
Barrel: LRI 40-inch barrel with 1:9 twist that was “structured” by tacomHQ
Action: McMillian TAC50
Trigger: Timney
Muzzle brake: Terminator T6
Bipod: LRA
Scope Mount: Custom 350 MOA mount by S&S Sporting
Cheek Piece: Custom by S&S Sporting
Scope: Vortex Razor 6-35×56 FFP with EBR-7D MOA reticle
Rings: Double set of Leupold Mark IV Support optics: Delta and a Charlie TARAC from tacomHQ

The barrel is pretty amazing Humphreys said it never heated up with all the shots its highest temperature was 88F.

These guys have held the WW twice their first was 3.3 miles broken by the Texan group at 4 miles on the 69th shot. Coincidence that the Humphrey group WW was on the 69th shot also.
