My way of dealing with it all is I open 4 tabs, and while one thread is loading, I read another. Hope this helps.

Didn’t say it did. I would guess it is related to WHM and it’s background processes.

Found an interesting bottleneck and tried an experiment that seems to have helped (converting the session table from MEMORY to InnoDB). Seems like a bad idea, but things got better instantly, so...we'll see.

Any of the tables that are constant write to should be converted to InnoDB. If they are primary read only tables the MyISAM.

Well, whatever you did worked. It was like a glacial flow this morning.

I get that for most tables, but the session table is almost universally believed to be best as a MEMORY table. But I did some reading that suggested InnoDB might be better for relatively high-use servers, and we basically have the whole DB read into RAM at this point anyway, so I figured I'd give it a go.

I don't fully understand WHY it worked, but it certainly seems to be making a difference. The backups are still doing their thing in the background, and our CPU load is a little elevated, but I'm hopeful that we're chipping away at the various bottlenecks.

FWIW, AC told me that PHP 7.1 is on the radar (which requires a slight update to vB 3.8.11 as well). The rest of the stuff is up to date at this point.

7.1 is end of life. 7.2 is lowest still in support and that is only another year.

Meh. We're good at EOL around here. ;)

(And not even vB4 is compatible with 7.2, so that's a much bigger upgrade.)

I'm cautiously optimistic that the changes to the database structure are game changers and that we won't notice any slowdowns at all now, even during games. We'll see.

Sunday will be the true litmus test, but so far so good. Browsing CP the last few days has been like cruising the Autobahn.

Yeah, I've been monitoring a lot of stuff on the backend, and before the changes there would usually at least be a few queries (stuff that runs to load stuff) sitting there in line waiting for their turn to be run. Now it's pretty much always just stuff sitting there at 0 seconds and then gone. No one will hardly notice it, but at its fastest submitting a post is a little slower than it used to be, but that happens a few thousand times per day compared to just viewing which happens hundreds of thousands of times per day.

Technically this new system uses a ton more RAM and CPU, but we weren't using what we had before. Basically, we changed from a system that was hammering our slowest resource (hard drives) to a system that uses our fastest.

So again, I'm optimistic. I haven't seen a blip of a slowdown since I changed over that last table a week ago.

I wasn't around much during the game other than checking now and then, but it seemed to be doing OK when I did check. Other reports?

I didn't personally notice anything, but I'd imagine we'll always have weird little blips here and there. As long as it's not 1) recurring or 2) related to traffic volume, I'm not going to worry about it much.

Regarding the "a little slow" with regard to posting, submitting a post will always be a tiny bit slower than it used to be due to the different DB structure. (To oversimplify, we've prioritized reading over writing a tiny bit.) Shouldn't take more than 5-10 seconds at most, though.

It was only for about 15-20 minutes this morning (for me)

Even still, when I hit submit it (generally) posts immediately. It was taking several seconds for pages to load and for my replies to post. It wasn't as bad as game days last year, but it was noticeably slower than it has been recently. It only lasted 15-20 mins though.

Every night around 1:30am Central, the Planet is down for 15 minutes or so. I'd assumed that was some type of maintenace or upgrades being installed, but I know not for sure. That's a DaFace, Bearcat, or AustinChief "fix your shit" situation.

We have Blaine Gabbert less than a week and the server shits the bed.
