Tryout players could stick; Tyler Bray, Sanders Commings look sharp

Moving on to those players that are already signed...

"Tyler Bray had a nice day today," Reid said, "I think that is obvious. He made some nice throws down in the red zone. He has to continue to make progress, but he did some nice things."

Bray was clearly the best quarterback on the field. It wasn't really close (Dayne Crist was a far second.) He has a strong arm and that was evident on a number of deep balls. You could tell he has a shot to make it. Just the way he was able to fire the ball into the receiver. It just felt like a pro quarterback.

"It was good to see [Sanders]Commings work at safety," Reid continued. "He played a little bit of corner but was primarily at safety. It was nice to see the progress that he made as he went on. We feel like he can still play corner but that gives us the flexibility to play that free safety position."

Flexibility. That's the name of the game for the KC Chiefs. The Chiefs now have two players -- Dunta Robinson and Commings -- who could realistically play either safety or corner. Both were acquired this offseason.

Interesting note: Commings, an SEC player like Bray, noted after Saturday's practice that Bray is pretty damn good. Commings was asked which quarterbacks he faced in his career that were better than Bray. Commings' response was Aaron Murray, his own quarterback at Georgia, and "the one from Alabama", who is A.J. McCarron.

Perfect description.....besides being a ****in midget........I'm sure Smith will do well but it really seems like he pushes the ball when he throws....something weird about it...I like his mobility. But Bray clearly throws the best ball. Just needs some experience...and if the coaching staff keeps it real, Bray will win the backup job.....

QB - Tyler Bray- (on what he plans to first ask Chiefs QB Alex Smith)

"Just how to study to be an NFL QB. I’ve never been here before so I don’t know and he’s been around the league, he understands, he knows the ups and downs and I just hope to learn from him."

An undrafted rookie free agent is creating the most hope about our future.

Sigh.

Sigh.

I was hoping KC would use a 4th or 5th round pick on him. I'll be honest, I was depressed when we did not pick Bray up in the draft.

I was ecstatic that we signed him as a UDFA. We got him for nothing.

And yes it is sad that an UDFA QB is generating this much hope. It's even more sad that KC's history with QB's is the biggest contributing factor to Bray generating this much hope.

I know as Chiefs' fans we are not used to having stability at the QB position for more than 3 years at the most. But if this kid can put it all together we just might have a good to great starting QB for the next 10 - 12 years.

Today's Bray Wisdom:

Tyler Bray will one day shoot a man just for snorin' too loud.
Posted via Mobile Device

mcaj22 05-14-2013 12:52 PM

i dont usually follow the hype either, I didnt for Stanzi, Geno Smith, Cassel, nor will I for Alex Smith either

Tyler Bray is interesting for this reason:

A) Recruited by Lane Kiffin

B) Last guy the Chiefs got from a poorly ran Kiffin team: Eric Berry, who is 1 of 2 good players this team has generated in the last 4 draft classes or 4 years for that matter because we havent brought in a FA worth a shit either.

C) Last UDFA from Tennessee: Arian Foster. How'd he work out?

CII) Bray was a part of a pass offense that generated 1st and 2nd round WRs in Patterson and Hunter, so those guys just did it on their own right?

D) Foster and Bray had some similar knocks on them coming out, Foster fell cause of his work ethic, motivation, part time play etc and Bray had all those knocks PLUS character issues ontop of that.

E) Bray was recruited by Kiffin and had to play all of his career under a new regime in Dooley, Dooley was/is ****ing awful. And of course Dooley that douche is going to throw Bray under the bus any chance he gets. Dooley, got fired and Butch Jones took over, Tyler Bray, though seeking bad advice had his back up against the wall... recruited by Kiffin, went through a regime of Derek Dooley and his shit coaching and now would have to work with a new regime in Butch Jones? players in college rarely survive 3 coaching changes without a new coach wanting to play THEIR recruits and THEIR schemes. Bray's biggest decision of his life was to gamble and enter the draft (and it blew up in he and his family's face) or stay for another year, under his third coach and new scheme, and hope he isnt benched, or put up worse numbers.

He has his red flags, they arent Titus Young red flags, but they are certainly Brett Favre-like where he probably sends his dong to chicks and gives zero ****s about it because he can step on the field and throw the ball 50 yards. And that's fine. He has "it." And hes only 21/22, he can be groomed like Aaron Rodgers for 3 years before he ever sees the field. And he is a pure insurance plan for Andy/Dorsey. Alex Smith and friends play terrible ball and have losing records, Bray buys everyone at least an extra season because they can start pumping media hype into a young QB that a media would love to eat up and did when he was in college.

Vols QB Tyler Bray getting shot with Chiefs

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Tyler Bray believes that every rookie has something to prove.

He may have more than most.

The former Tennessee quarterback left school a year early hoping he'd be chosen highly in the draft, given the relatively weak collection of college signal-callers coming out this year. Instead, every team passed on him over the course of seven agonizing rounds

Once the draft ended, his phone suddenly lit up with teams trying to sign him as a free agent, and Bray settled on joining new coach Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs.

"It's not your choice. I mean, you're not in the draft room picking," Bray said after a workout during the Chiefs' rookie minicamp, which wrapped up Sunday. "So you just wait around, and if you don't get drafted, you pick up the phone, try to find a team.

"I found a team here in Kansas City."

One where he thinks he can thrive.

The Chiefs traded their second-round pick and a conditional choice in next year's draft to acquire Alex Smith from the San Francisco 49ers. They also signed Chase Daniel as a free agent, and still have former fifth-round pick Ricky Stanzi on the roster.

But outside of Smith, their unquestioned starter, everything appears to be up in the air, and that means Bray -- with all the physical tools -- could have a shot at a backup job.

"He just needs to continue to improve. That's what he needs to do," said Reid, who earned a reputation as being a "quarterback whisperer" during his days with the Philadelphia Eagles.

"He needs to learn the offense, handle it the right way and do the right things. He understands that," Reid said. "He knows the places he made mistakes at Tennessee."

Ah, there's the rub.

Despite putting up the kind of numbers that get quarterbacks with big arms drafted -- he threw for 3,612 yards and 34 touchdowns as a junior -- Bray watched his stock dive amid questions about his maturity, work ethic and character.

When things would go poorly for the Vols, Bray's body language tended to sag. He admitted that he wasn't always the most prepared during interviews leading up to the draft, and a series of minor off-the-field incidents that included a vandalism charge gave teams reason to pause.

"I made a lot of mistakes at Tennessee, a lot of off-the-field issues," Bray confided, "and that had a lot to do with it."

When asked about the specific incidents, Bray said he's moved beyond them: "They were just stupid mistakes," he added. "I'm here now, I'm a free agent and that's OK with me."

One thing that was never questioned much was Bray's physical attributes.

He stands out in a yellow No. 9 jersey at 6-foot-6 and 215 pounds, and over the course of three days at the Chiefs' practice facility, he showcased that strong arm on a series of deep throws that caught the attention of his fellow rookies and members of the front office.

Even though he left Tennessee with a year of eligibility remaining, Bray still set a school record for most 400-yard passing games (400) and once threw for 530 yards in a game against Troy, the second-best performance in the history of the Southeastern Conference.

Still, the learning curve in the NFL is a steep one.

For one thing, Bray mostly used hand signals and ran a no-huddle offense with the Vols, so rounding up his teammates and relaying plays in the huddle feels a bit strange. The playbook is new, and he hasn't really had to start making checks and adjustments at the line of scrimmage yet -- those things will happen down the road, provided the Chiefs keep him around.

Then there's the speed of things in the NFL, and not just on the field. Meetings go quicker, practices move at a faster tempo, and sometimes it's a challenge just to keep up.

"Everything is a little more difficult, a little more hurried than I was used to," Bray said. "I could tell by the first couple snaps that this was way different."

The Chiefs move from rookie minicamp right into organized team activities, and Tuesday will be the first chance for Bray to practice with Smith and the rest of the Chiefs' veterans.

"Every rookie in the draft is going to have to prove something," Bray said. "I mean, most of us weren't going to come in and start. So I'm just going to come in, battle, try to learn from Alex -- he's a veteran quarterback, and I can learn a lot from him."

Does he have any regrets about leaving school early?

"I'm here now," Bray said. "Just trying to move forward."

I didn't want to make a thread for this, but Eric Berry has some comments about our rookies, and Tyler Bray in particular.

Quote:

Chiefs DB Eric Berry said the rookies' desire to be great is already paying off.

"We have a nice class in here right now," Berry stated. "Everybody’s coming in ready to work; I think that’s the biggest plus, guys are focused. I can tell they got a lot down pat, just from the rookie minicamp because when we go in our meetings and coach asks them about certain plays and certain calls, they’re on top of it. I feel like those guys are ready to get in and are ready to help this team out."

Berry also gave some thoughts on his fellow Tennessee Volutneer, Chiefs QB Tyler Bray.

"That’s my dawg," Berry said. "I know he’s going to come and do great things for the Chiefs. Right now, I can’t really get him out of the hotel because he’s been studying his playbook and watching film, so, he’s pretty much locked in and focused."

Was trying to think of some great QBs who went undrafted to gage Bray's possible success.

Kurt Warner is one of the greatest undrafted QBs, of course; He was special. One in a million.

Tony Romo, though? I could definitely see Bray having a similar level of success if everything pans out.

Bottom line; he's either a good to great starting QB for KC or selling insurance.

He ain't going to be bouncing around the league as a back up for 10 years.

at this point we would take a Warner or Romo

hopefully the the 1st round talent wins out over the undrafted brain.

Old, from the combine, but interesting.

INDIANAPOLIS -- Tyler Bray might be the most gifted passer in the 2013 NFL Draft, but teams haven't viewed him as a legitimate franchise-caliber quarterback due to his prickly personality and adolescent ways. However, coaches and scouts are reconsidering their respective opinions on Bray after seeing the Tennessee star light up passing drills over the past few days at the NFL Scouting Combine. Bray has been one of the most impressive throwers in Indy, showing outstanding arm strength, velocity and touch on a variety of throws to wide receivers, tight ends and running backs. From high-arcing tosses to vertical throws to lasers on intermediate routes, Bray has the capacity to hit receivers in strides at every distance. Furthermore, he showed the ability to change speeds and trajectories on his throws depending on the circumstance.

When I looked at Bray's film from the fall, I believed he was a gifted passer with A-plus arm talent. He showed the capacity to make all of the throws from the pocket with zip and velocity. Although his ball placement and accuracy fluctuates due to his sloppy footwork and fundamentals, Bray's ability to make tight-window throws separates him from others at the position. Additionally, Bray is one of the few quarterbacks in the draft with experience playing in a pro-style offense that featured traditional drops from under center, quick throws from the shotgun and pistol, and play-action passes from two-back formations. Given the importance NFL coaches place on playing the game effectively from the pocket, Bray's game is ideally suited for Sundays.

Supposedly he also had the highest clocked speed on his throws at the combine.

It keeps getting better and better with Bray.

I remember the combine tidbits about Bray only going as a "thrower" but was the most impressive QB there.
