Yep I ate there nearly every day while working during construction or ATT Town Pavilion used to set the pig statue out at entrance. The City forced them out of there with eminent domain and wouldnt let him be a part of the P&L district. The funny thing was the were their forever successfully yet all the original eateries have pulled out of P&L. It seems there was a Edwards in Waldo at one time to.

Actually I think it was called Jake Edwards BBQ in Waldo. Maybe a relation I dunnoActually Jake Edwards was Danny's father and the place by what is now Sprint was call Lil Jake's Eat It and Beat It named for Danny the son. Jake Edwards started a restaurant during the great depression and started his BBQ joint at 83rd and Wornall in the Waldo district.

I fancy getting Barq's red creme soda when I go there. A rarity in this region.

I tried Slaps last week. Very Impressed, thank you for the recommendation.

SAUTO 12-17-2018 05:46 PM

And another thing about SLAPS, I mix the hot and the sweet sauce to put on their meats.

And I use the white sauce for the cheddar jalapeno sausage. Which is awesome. Krizmans makes it.

I was in KC last night and thru lunch today. Went to Jack Stack for lunch and it was great. Today's Soup was Burnt Ends Stew. It was off the charts. Had the Hot Russ I think it was called. Not he Poor Russ the other one. It was great as well. The Burnt Ends Stew though was just wow!

I have that very problem - what with living here in Olathe....I tend to hit that dump at least once or twice a month....

Brisket and ribs....damn...heaven.....

LC's is still pretty good; inconsistent but lower ceiling, but higher floor. The Mitch Trubisky of KC BBQ. LOL.
Joe's is very consistent across the board. Sad, but it's probably true that it's overall the best these days.
I usually grab Gates to go from the aforementioned spot when I want BBQ because I live nearby.

Ham on bun combo, side of BB. Great lunch. And some of the spicy sauce for dipping the fries.

Last time I was in KC was 2013. Been a long time. But I got a bunch of grub from the Gates on 40 Hwy and watched the Chiefs/Browns game at my sisters house. Alex Smiff Era. Must have hit it just right, ribs were AWESOME that day. :)

Gates Xtra Hot covers a multitude of sins for me.

So good, and great with fries. Who knew celery salt was so useful.

If your up around KCI do yourself a favor and give Scotts Kitchen a try you wont be dissapointed. They were talking about it on Fox4kc morning show its 1 on yelp's Top 50 places to eat in KC. I was really impressed lots of unique bbq dishes and Breakfast lunch dinner menu. I had the pulled pork burrito they talked about on fox and it was incredible I almost went the pulled pork tacos but it can wait for next time. Its at the SW Quad of NW Cookingham Dr and N Ambassador Dr. I kid you not this place impressed me hope it stays as that location seems to kill other food joints.

Has anyone been to Guy & Maes in Williamsburg recently? I haven't been there in 30 years. It used to be quite an attraction-just ribs

Coogs 05-11-2020 01:17 PM

I tried something, smoked ham salad on club crackers, this weekend from Brodecks on 105th and Roe. It was very good. My son brought home a quart of it, and we have been eating it as snacks. Not sure how the rest of their stuff is, but here is the link:

All seemed pleasantly surprised, and everyone's eyes widened when they tried their ribs.

They rely on their meat and don't even 'offer' a BBQ sauce. They have it, but they were clearly an afterthought, and the prominently also offer competitors sauces. . . KC Masterpiece X-tra Hot, Curley's Sweet and Smoky, etc. And they say on the menu to feel free to bring in your own sauce from home if you like something better.

In addition to great ribs, they have some unique things to recommend them. They have a smoked ham salad. The day we were there, they had a really really good smoked jalapeno cheddar long sausage. They do a good job on cheesy corn. Great onion rings. etc.

https://brobecksbbq.com/

I wouldn't put them on the highest level with Joe's KC, but they are a credit to the KC BBQ scene. A pleasant surprise, without all the hassle of being the 'go to' place at present. If you get a craving for that smoke ham salad, that's the only place to get it. And their ribs are good enough to elicit a smile and a moan or two.

Smokehouse has some Cajun butter chicken wings that are absolutely amazing. The ads with Fescoe on 610 got me to try them and it's one of the times I appreciated his pitch or opinion greatly. Their beans are as good as it gets in KC as well. The one in Gladstone is better than their Zona location.

I'll give Smokin Guns in NKC a nod for their burnt ends. Not as good as Joe's but as good as you'll find north of the river I'd guess.

Good to know, forgot they even had one out there. I always get their chopped burnt end sandwich when I'm there, the other meats I've had were good but not great. I'd gladly make a meal out of their wings and beans though.

For my son's second birthday I made a pork butt and slaw and some other stuff. My MIL was in charge of the beans. She said she found a recipe online and had it under control.

Everyone raved about them. They were the best beans they've ever had. They kept asking who made them and I hadn't even had time to eat anything so I just said my MIL not thinking anything of it. She decided to buy a pan from Smokehouse instead of making them last minute.

I don't go after pork, but I do like a beef rib if they've got it because they're pricey and I never cook them myself. That and brisket or burnt ends or sausage.

When I smoke at home it's almost always pork or chicken of some kind. Gonna get brave and throw down on a brisket or two this summer though.

Why Not? 05-11-2020 07:07 PM

Not sure if I ever shared this with you guys but early on in 2019, my wife entered some giveaway(anniversary? monthly thing?)via Twitter for Q39 and she won! We won 4 tix to a Royals game which we gave away since we live in Arizona, a catered feast that I was able to take advantage of since I was in KC for work last September(I got twenty people in KC that really loved me that week!), tons of Q39 and Boulevard swag, a bunch of Q39 sauce and some BBQ stuff(meat thermometer, tongs, etc). It was bad ass!

I always love Gates and give me a Z Man over any individual item anywhere, but I’ve got a special place in my heart for Q39 now.

I grew up north of the river so the Gladstone Smokehouse was our local BBQ joint. My dad is a Bryant’s guy so we’d venture down for that occasionally, but if it was just a random Tuesday and we wanted BBQ, Smokehouse is where we went. Haven’t been in years though. Just moved back to KC in 2018. Going to have to take the folks up there once things return to normalcy and try those wings.

Our pickin's are slim north of the river for really good Q, but if you haven't had Jousting Pigs on the square in Liberty yet you should really give it a try. The burnt ends and ribs are both top notch. And they have a jalapeno cheesy corn that is tough to stop eating too.

I grew up in Northland and still live here we have pretty good choices honestly. I can remember when Marty's bbq was the only game in town. It was ok but you always had to look over your shoulder wondering if a mob hit was about to happen in there.

As good of stuff as you churn out, do it. Eating a brisket you popped out is immensely satisfying.

Some dudes won’t do it because the bark isn’t as good, but I’m a chicken shit so I leave it on for 2-4 and foil that thing, run it to 200, let it rest for a good hour, shred it, get fatter. Goddamn I love brisket.

You’re good for it. Hell if you don’t want to mind the coals You can probably finish it in the oven.

Just do it. Brisket is so goddamned good.

But give me Jack Stack sausage. That shit is the cure.

Dayze 05-12-2020 06:23 AM

I always liked Wabash; was a perfect place to stop for lunch on a motorcycle ride. I've only had a sandwich or two of theirs, but I thought it was good . It's been probably 2 or 3 years since i"ve been there - I need to get back.

I've been to Gates probably 3 times in 15 years, and i thoguht it sucked each time. there's one close to where I work, and some out of town co-workers came in and invited me to lunch;...naturally, we end up at Gates a few months back. I thought it was average....and that's being more than generous. Time before that was probably 2010 or so, on a whim on the way back from a Royals game with the WIfe. SUcked. and Finally , the time before that was probably 2006 or so.

I dont know that it is about it; or if it's a mental thing for me. I just don't think it's very good at all; it's never ever at the forefront when we want / go to get BBQ. Not even in my top 10.

Just like everyone else...I have my favorites. But this is KC!! (Say it like "THIS IS SPARTA!") I'd enjoy bbq just about any of the mentioned places. Except Zarda.

Take note restaurant peeps. I had lunch @ Zarda about 20 years ago. The meat was room temp at best. That said to me....not fresh. Soooo, for 20 years I havn't stepped foot in there. Serve a good product.

Anyone tried Harp? The stuff he posts on FB looks amazing

KCUnited 09-05-2023 04:05 PM

Seeing a few visiting KC posts about hotels, transportation and such and had my own question so bumping this as a potential useful resource

What's the word on Chef J BBQ in the Bottoms (West not Billay)?

I'm coming in for the week 3 Bears game and want to try someplace new to me

Any CPers been?

Came home to KC this weekend for the first time in 8 years. Hit up Joes first thing. Next day I tried Q39 for the first time. It's not even in the conversation with Joe's for best BBQ in KC. I'd take Joe's burnt ends, pulled pork, and ribs over those 3 at Q39 every day of the week.

Chef J and Wolfepack BBQ are the new hotness. Sadly I’ve yet to go to either, but I’ve heard nothing but great things. Wolfepack in particular has a pretty rabid following already.

First timers should hit Jack Stack - Freight House. That sets the foundation for KC BBQ: cool atmosphere, close to downtown/P&L.

Expand from there: Arthur Bryant's at 18th & Brooklyn for the historic KC BBQ; Joe's KC BBQ at 47th & Mission for the "wait in a ridiculously long line at a gas station for killer BBQ" experience; Gates at 103rd(ish) & State Line to get yelled at (those who know, know); then Q39 South for the OP "we rich" BBQ. Leave the LCs to the locals... it's killer BBQ but the experience will leave most out-of-towners traumatized.

Rosedale

Bryant's ain't Bryant's anymore. Do not recommend, sadly. Nor Gates.

Joe's is king. Slaps is ok. Q39 is good but I hate the atmosphere.

Rosedale is boiled meat with watered down ketchup.

Wolfepack looks legit as well

I'm converging with some Chicago friends, many of whom are ex-KC residents and Chiefs fans so really wanting to take them someplace new and fresh for
BBQ, and myself

Thanks

This isn't that hard. It's Joe's or Q39. Wolfepack is next. Haven't tried Chef J.

Big fan of Q39, but I live out of town and only make it back once a year or so, so I’m no expert.

If you like Brontosaurus ribs.

My favorite treat is burnt ends. Who is the best in KC market? Extra smokey and tender with sweet sauce.

I tried Chef J soon after it opened and never cared to go back. Nothing was a big concern, but lots of little things just added up being negative overall for me.

Try Slaps if you haven't been yet, then go for cheap drinks and pinball at 403 Club.

JOES!

O.city 09-05-2023 08:39 PM

Slaps is my go to now.

NWTF 09-05-2023 09:34 PM

Slaps and Joes in no particular order. jackstack,Q39 and meat mitch are good too. It all depends on what you go there for but you cant really go wrong at those places.

Stuff like Gates, LCs, Smokin Guns, Famous Daves are just fine for lunch based on your location while at work if you travel around the city. Good at different things but not horrible.

Avoid Rosedale, Hickory Log and Wyandotte if your on the Kansas side. I cant remember the names of the ones I hate the most on the Missouri side.

DQCHIEF 09-06-2023 07:50 AM

I love the Smokehouse! I never see it mentioned but my personal favorite.

BWillie 09-06-2023 08:11 AM

Definitely Famous Daves and Dickeys BBQ pit. Amazing legendary KC BBQ
