What if cutting Reid allows you to pay Sneed on the tag this year? It's realistic you can save $7 - $8 mil by cutting Reid and signing a vet. This defense has plenty of leaders: Jones, Bolton, Sneed, McDuffie. I like Reid. I don't love him. And if you can save $12 mil on a player you just like, but don't love, you have to at least discuss it.

I don't see anyone saying he sucks or that they hate him.

They play 3 safeties so much, though, that you have to replace Reid somehow. So you’re saving $12M on Reid, but what are you spending to replace him? 1/3 to 1/2 of the savings, and at that point, the value and sense shrink away.

Also have to add in that Reid knows Spags defense. Do we want to have a new guy in that is learning vs someone who knows the D and Spags trusts to make the DB play calls?

Christian Wilkins at $28M per year is making the Chris Jones deal look pretty reasonable.

And the idea of replacing him with Christian Wilkins is looking pretty dumb now that Wilkins got $28M per year. That’s a crazy price for him.

Absolutely. Once the Raiders gave Jones his $32 million a year, the market would have been set and Wilkins would have still gotten around what he did, so if we went after him it would been a horse apiece money wise.

I was a little worried that Veach caved and paid so much, but as the chips keep falling it's pretty clear why he did it. There was literally no other choice.

yeah Veach must have known where the market was heading today. Seeing Jones in a Raiders because we wanted to save $2-$3 million on an inferior DT would have sucked big time.

Wilkins with Crosby and Koonce is a pretty phenomenal DL. If Wilson continues his improvement playing inside, that's a dominant DL.

Honestly, Jones would have been crazy not to take the deal, or even one more like what Wilkins received.

There are worse problems to deal with compared to overpaying your Hall of Fame DT to be a Chief for life.

And yeah, the thought of having to line up AGAINST Chris Jones in a Raider or Texans uniform is soooooo much worse than the alternative of just paying him.

Oh yeah, once I saw what the Raiders paid Wilkins, and it became quite apparent what would have occurred had Veach continued to play hardball, any doubt that I had about what they gave him was instantly gone.

RAS is just an index, it's not meant to be predictive of success. All it tells you is approximately how a player's measured size and athleticism compares to other players at their position. The scores lack context, sure, but that's the nature of what it is. I don't think it's fair to compare it to PFF, which ultimately boils down to some anonymous dipshit's subjective grading of game tape.

Looking at some of the Day 1 contract being handed out, Jones is already looking like a steal.

If Mahomes passes Brady, then I hope Jones passes Charles Haley for most by a non-QB.

Crazy in comparison to what people on this forum were hoping in the event that Chris Jones left the Chiefs. They were hoping Wilkins could be signed for $23-24M per year...but he comes in much closer to $30M per year. KC is better off just keeping Chris Jones at the high price.

Yep, Veach doesn’t sign Jones. He was going to be a Raider.

I honestly think Clark stepping in probably had a lot to do with him catching wind that the Raiders were ready to pounce on CJ. There was no way Clark was going to let one of his newly created legends end up there the year after back to back SB wins.

Have to hand it to the Raiders, they were ready to rock the NFL world. Glad we didn’t let them. It was definitely the right call. The momentum shift of that occurring would have been pretty earth shattering.

Re: Jones and aging through his deal…

It has come to my attention that the decline of Aaron Donald has been greatly exaggerated.

Per ESPN’s pass rush win rate stats, Donald at age 32 last year led the DT position in pass rush wins and was tied for first with Jones in pass rush win rate %: https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/...-players-teams

The Rams’ down year in 2022 with Donald’s ankle injury put a cloud over his perception, but he was still very clearly a top-2 DT in the league throughout his age 32 season.

Again, just to say, the only thing that’s gonna be able to keep Chris from maintaining his elite level of play through at least the first three years of the contract would be injury. These freaks of nature dominate for awhile and I won’t be surprised if Donald has another tremendous year now that the Rams are good again.

It's insane to me that people shit on bringing him back. Sometimes this place gets too wonky. He again showed he's the best DT in the league and it's not even close
