The locals seem to, but I’ve seen a lot of games there and it’s nice to be sitting in the AC when it’s 95 and humid as hell outside.

My brother and his wife live in a mobile home community in Punta Gorda. They went and stayed 12 miles north tag his mother in law’s home, no damage at all at her place only inconvenience was losing power yesterday and it’s still out. Anyway, he drove back to his mobile home a little while ago, and it’s unreal, no damage at from the storm surge or by the winds. Plus his electricity is working, it’s just so surprising, his community street floods normally on just heavy rain storms.

That's good to hear. Hopefully my friends in Punta Gorda will return to a similar situation. From the graphics showing predicted storm surges, it looked really bad.

At times I think we'd all be better off getting weather advice from witch doctors. They'd probably be right about shit more often, and be far less scary while doing it. Plus, no commercials.

A side note on generators. Everyone that lives in weather areas (me because I live in NE KS and am the last house in KS bordering NE in my area ie. an Owl set down on the power line and I was the only one w/o power) where snow/ice storms/'nados etc should have one. I am not sure about populated areas such as KC where power isn't lost that much.

FL would be a great example. It sounds like most people do.

My point is that maintenance needs to be kept up. How many do?

My most (least) favorite story about generators: I DIDN'T pull maintenance prior to the winter. We get 12" and power went out (last house in KS) at 1:00 am. I have a big fish tank, thus power is important. I drag out the generator from the garage (it has a garage door opener, which didn't work:) I am in my slippers and robe trying to start the darn thing. My right arm gives out from pulling so I use my left arm. I am now sweating and take off my robe. Cussing about how my stupid self should have check it during the summer.

So I am brilliant, it is so damn cold the oil is too cold. I drag the B&tch in next to the fire place and start a roaring fire (took an hour), sat another hour and thought the oil should be fine. Drag the beast back out into the 12" of snow, still in my skibbies and yank a few more hundred times:(

Then I thought, you know, you should really make sure the fuel petcock is in the on position. Two pulls. GRRR. I thought I was brilliant, but it turns out I am a dumbass...

An aside, the power came back on 30 min later

End note, buy a generator that has an electric start unless you like to exercise and sweat.

Last note: make sure the battery is fulling charged (another short story)

In conclusion, generator maintenance is important

My bad. Construction starts on the stadium this year. Supposedly, they are playing in the new stadium next year.

Its going to be a whole business/sports/entertainment complex full of high rise buildings. Finishing that part will be 4 years.

We keep building and Mother Nature keeps knocking em down.

Reminds me of that George Carlin bit where he talks about the audacity of man to think they can control the weather and Mother Nature just shakes us off like a dog shakes off water.

Chief Pote 10-10-2024 05:50 PM

I have a funny generator story, for the record it didn’t happen to me. Anyway, I bought a transfer switch when we set up our generator system. The sales guy for the switch said to make sure you lock up your generator after you get it going. I guess some guy started his up during an outage went to bed with it running for the night, he could hear it running from his bedroom. Sometime during the night the power shut off, he didn’t get up to investigate. Morning came around and some asshole grabbed his lawnmower from his shed, started it up to mimic the sound. Shut off the generator and ran off with it. Moral of the story, always lock up your shit. :banghead:

Holladay 10-10-2024 06:00 PM

That is a good one.

Checks the box to lock generator and remember to turn the fuel on.

If the seats are ruined at least they’ll only have to install about 1500 to be at regular capacity for next season.

I never have understood the hate for it. Comfortable seats, and A/C on a hot/humid Florida summer day, and it's relatively cheap. What's not to like.

Dallas Chief 10-10-2024 07:11 PM

Got lucky and didn’t need the generator this go around. However, dusted her off, put some gas in, started right up on the second pull after sitting for at least 5 years(inherited from my in laws). Some Generac sub line called Wheelhouse 5550. Glad I didn't have to truly call it into service!

I hate that place. I’ve went there to see my Cardinals play. I live 5 minutes from it. They give out $10 tickets a lot. Never go.

I would go to Kauffman stadium just to watch baseball. The sight lines at the K are fantastic.

I used to go quite a bit when I lived in Tampa. Like I said, cheap entertainment and an escape from the oppressive heat. Now that I live in Spring Hill, I don't go nearly as much, but I've always enjoyed the venue.

I went on a date there once with a consultant. Who brought a friend.

So, low key terrible date.

Tomorrow is going to be fun. I didn’t even try today because I need supplies. **** going to any store today. Lost 9 fence sections and 7 of my screen panels blew out in the pool.

Got super lucky. If this storm was even 50 miles north of what it did, I would be calling my insurance company and that is never good. Never call your insurance company in Florida. They help, and next year you get a “bend you over” increase in rates.

Sounds like my friends in Lakeland did okay. The Mrs said she had to work until 5 on Monday or they would have gotten out before the hurricane came. They lost the screen to the lenoi and a approximately 8ft section of privacy fence. A lot of branches and other debris in the yard but it sounds like nothing major, overall.

This is Florida. I've had to work through several tropical storms. Employers here will make you work till the last possible minute, and expect your ass back to work the moment it passes.

When I worked for the military they came to me and said you have been declared an "essential civilian" for the military.

When I asked what does that mean, they said you cant leave town if there is a hurricane. I was like what? I'm a civilian with a family. Ohhhh no worries, we will house you and the family in a hurricane proof place on base, If you cant make it, we will send troops and or helicopters to get you on base if needed. Do I get a raise? they laughed and said no.

This was not overplayed. It was the worse hurricane to ever direct hit this area.

I'm not saying they did, because history shows that it's extremely hard to predict the weather and little things can cause big changes between what's forecast to happen and what actually happens, but there is nothing good about meteorologists over playing the severity of a storm. All it does is makes sure people won't listen the next time when a storm is actually extremely deadly.

We will leave tomorrow for home. Hopefully have power by then.

We hired our lawn guy to chainsaw some stuff and clean up the yard. We also had some neighbors chip in to clean up our yard. Also, took down some of our hurricane prep of our house. All the garage prep was taken down by a neighbor. Neighbors helping neighbors. When we get back we will have to pay it forward too.

Maybe this was to help the old retired couple situation. Either way I’ll take it and pay it forward.
