To be clear. I'd only want them to do this if they draft who they feel is a legit future qb star

6 last year would have meant jack shit.

Once we get our QB in this draft, however, my stance will change on this.

No matter what we do, I think we are going to win a few more games.

Let's be very clear about this. Bringing in a vet-mentor is something we do AFTER signing one of the two QB candidates. It all hedges on that, and it's not about wins.

Assuming we draft a QB, it's time to start caring about winning; 2010 draft be damned.
These players need to win and start building confidence. So as far as I'M concerned, the coming of Sanchez/Stafford officially closes the door on "You play to win the draft".

Despite bad decisions, Andre Smith can still play

Some NFL teams now appear leery of Alabama tackle Andre Smith.
Let me start with a full disclaimer: I like Alabama tackle Andre Smith. I think he's a good person, a good guy to have on your team and one heck of a football player.

Good people make bad decisions, though, and Smith has made a few since the end of last season.

It started with his suspension from the Allstate Sugar Bowl, which was agent-related, whether he wants to admit it publicly or not. Nobody ever accused him of taking money himself or signing with an agent, but there was definitely something that went down between a member of his family and a person acting as an agent that he wasn't upfront about to Alabama coach Nick Saban and Alabama compliance officials.

It was a tough decision for the Crimson Tide at the time as to whether they should play him in the Sugar Bowl. But they weren't going to take any chances and sent their Outland Trophy winner home. Kudos to Saban and Alabama officials for sticking by their guns and making the right choice.

Ian Rapoport of The Birmingham News has an in-depth story about Smith admitting to one NFL team that his uncle did have contact with an agent representative and that Smith wasn't on the up-and-up with Saban about the whole situation. This comes after Smith told the media at the NFL combine that his suspension "had nothing to do with an agent."

Some NFL teams are now leery of Smith, especially after he skipped out of the NFL combine without telling anybody. If he wasn't physically ready to work out then, will he be physically ready to start training camp this summer?

Either way, there are now questions about Smith's character, which is a shame. He was never in a trace of trouble when he was at Alabama until the Sugar Bowl suspension.

His stock is dropping, and there are some analysts who say he could plummet to the end of the first round.

If that happens, some team at the end of the first round is going to get a guy who will play in the NFL for 10-plus years and has a chance to be a special player at left tackle.

Smith has obviously gotten some bad advice, made some bad choices and probably cost himself some money.

But the guy can still play. The game tape doesn't lie, and two or three ill-advised decisions don't outweigh three years of performance.

If he does indeed fall significantly in the draft (which I still have to see to believe), my bet is that Smith comes back hungrier than ever -- and a little bit smarter when it comes to making key decisions in his life.

Not impressed with this list at all.

3. Mark Sanchez, USC 6-3, 227
Pre-Combine Position Rank: 2
Post-Combine Skinny: Passed every test. Showed real, honest fire and passion for the game off the field, measured up to Matthew Stafford on it. Cranked out a solid 9-8 broad jump and scored high marks for throwing when he wasn't expected to.
Positives: Quick release. Good at getting the ball out of his hands in a hurry … Great fire. He’s not Matt Leinart … Can move*.
Negatives: Was fine at USC, but not elite … Barely 6-3 … NFL arm, but not jaw-dropping … If Pete Carroll didn’t think he was ready, what’s the issue?

*That's the only thing of importance I'm taking from this guy's breakdown. Not that we didn't know this already.

I am shocked to see him at #2. And that was PRE combine?

Yeah in hindsight I think everyone is relieved Stafford didn't slip to the Chiefs. He sucks

Well at least we don't have too many guys left who are of the "we can't draft a 1st round QB. It's just too Risky and could set this franchise back for years!" opinion anymore.

Pioli Zombie 02-09-2012 08:32 PM

Yeah at this point we have all learned our lesson. If there is a walking piece of shit available in the first round that plays qb DRAFT HIM!!!!!!!

kcxiv 02-09-2012 08:44 PM

Ill take Stafford in a heartbeat.

Regardless if he's worth it.... draft him 1st rd..... they win.

With what the NFL has become over the last ten years, I don't understand why you don't trade give the Colts your 1st,2nd, and 3rd round picks for the next 2 years for Luck and if they want more give it to them.

Pioli made the right decision in passing on Sanchez. Where he has errored is by never giving Cassel legit competition.

Because it takes two teams to tango. If I was running the Colts, I wouldn't trade that pick for anything.
