I would argue that this is a problem found in the single game playoff format, rather than it being something rooted in the college game.

A lot of fluky teams have made it a long way in both the NFL and March Madness thanks to way the system is aligned.

see my previous post for an elaboration on what I meant by 'fluky'

Fluky outcomes all the time because there isn't anything to really play for, so you have varying levels of mental preparation and readiness. Not to mention the seniors/juniors who are about to declare for the draft, and how that affects mental preparation.

It's why there are so many bowl game upsets. I put WAY more stock into regular season non-conference matchups. Everybody has lots to play for.

You put more stock in Alabama's team when they play the Southern Regional Alabama Wildcats? Okay.

Ahh, the old "well we weren't really trying to win" argument. LMAO

Nobody puts any stock into those types of games. I'm obviously talking about power conference vs power conference matchups during the regular season.

Unfortunately, these matchups are becoming less common in the college game.

That happens SO so so so often in bowl games. It's obvious when a team flat-out doesn't want to be there.

I don't know why you'd be laughing at something so obvious. Unless you think I'm bringing that up to defend Alabama's performance tonight or something. Which I'm not doing. Alabama played like they wanted to win. They also made a bunch of mistakes and they were severely outcoached on both sides of the ball by Stoops' staff.

yeah, the seeming trend towards bigger and bigger power conferences will make premier nonconference games a thing of the past.

Shit, weren't numerous Oregon players quoted saying they just just didn't give a shit about the bowl they were playing in since it wasn't going to be a NC just last year?

I don't know why every fan on earth doesn't think just like those Oregon players. I know I think that way,

They're 18-22 year old kids that are basically going on a vacation. Plenty of them are probably more amped about chasing down some strange and digging through a ridiculous hospitality bag in their suite than winning a game.

When the system favors a team with four wins over Southeastern Podunk St. over a team with one 3 point loss against Alabama, teams are going to schedule the Podunk St's with January in mind.

I doubt a four game playoff alters this reality.

Probably not. I suppose we can wait until we get to a 8-12 team playoff with SOS being a heavy seed determinant.

Absolutely.
