I was taught, and have passed along, that you carry your mask to where you're sure you're going to make the catch, then you toss it away so it's not in your way. Why? Because balls that go straight up like that are already hard to catch, and moving in space, so you don't want your adjusting to the ball to land you on your mask. Plus.....if somebody with a non-catcher's glove calls you off (and I agree YOU WANT THAT because of the glove you're wearing!!!), you want to hold onto the mask to keep them from tripping on it.
LOL, my first baseball coach told me to try to toss it into the dugout opening without taking my eye off the ball...
