I'll take sweeping the Cubs over winning against the Twins. Pen is worn out. If they don't show more next series. then I'll worry we are no better than last year.

Carpenter is hitting more line drives this year and fewer flyballs. It will depress his HR totals, but his average has to creep up. Just be patient. Fowler has the worst BABIP in baseball and Carpenter is 10th worst, but 40% of his contact is hard. It's just bad luck. If you bench him now, you're likely robbing the team of his regression to the mean, which means a month where he hits .400.

l thought he’d get better with a return to leadoff but how can this just be bad luck on batted balls?

2018 Carp batting leadoff
BA .080
OBP .207
SLG .120
OPS .327

BREAKING: Lat strain puts Martinez on DL

The Cardinals will be without their ace for at least the next week and a half after placing right-hander Carlos Martinez on the 10-day disabled list with a right lat strain, the club announced Thursday.

St. Louis recalled righty Mike Mayers from Triple-A Memphis to take Martinez's spot on the active roster.

Martinez entered play Thursday leading the National League with a 1.62 ERA and tops the Cardinals' pitching staff with 50 innings pitched and 47 strikeouts. The two-time All-Star has surrendered just one home run to the 210 batters he's faced this season.

The 26-year-old Martinez last pitched Tuesday, when he suffered his second loss of the season after allowing four runs (two earned) in five innings vs. the Twins. It's tough timing for the first-place Cardinals, who just lost catcher Yadier Molina for the next month with a groin injury.

Mayers was optioned Monday after picking up a victory with three innings of one-run ball in relief during a 14-inning affair against the Cubs on May 6. Mayers is 1-0 with a 1.86 ERA and a save in five appearances, all out of the bullpen, for St. Louis this year.

Unless it’s the type of injury that keeps bothering him all year, not a big deal at all. They only expect him to miss one start and may not have even made the move if they weren’t already playing bullpen roulette this season.

its one start. Not a big deal. But, still not calling up Flaherty? He’s killing it in the minors. It’s not performance related. Something is up we are not being told about.

The Cardinals need to employ a modified six man rotation where Carlos starts every fifth day and everyone else starts on five or six days rest. It would significantly curtail the wear on Weaver and Flaherty, and take Mikolas back to the routine he was used to in Japan while also giving Wacha's nitoglycerin scapula more rest.

Flaherty is just wasting innings in AAA. Any idea why he’s not being called up?

Dont' know. He was eligible yesterday, I believe.

BigRedChief 05-10-2018 08:55 PM

WTF? Gyrko is hot right now. He’s hit .500 against his old team. Why would you start Carpenter and his .163 average over Gyrko? And bat him second?:# Carpenter hasn’t even come close to putting the ball in play. Struck out twice by the 3 rd inning. Can someone explain how this is a good strategy?
