Fasted all day. Kicked some ass during workout. Wasn't even hungry after finishing my workout. Grubbed out on some pasta tonight. Now having a little Greek Yogurt with some honey.

I literally do not fathom how someone can eat nothing all day and then have enough energy for a workout.

OK, so I've been doing 17 reps x 4 with two 35-pound dumbbells for a month. Before that I was doing 10x4 with two 50-pound dumbbells. I'm going to switch back to my 50x10x4 routine and see if I've lost any strength. Should be interesting.

Just FYI, that's muscle endurance, not strength.

EDIT: Not saying that's bad. It's fine, just trying for clarity :)

Your muscles have plenty of energy stored in them. As long as you've eaten between workouts to fill them up with glycogen, there's no downside.

It's a pretty interesting experience. From what I've experienced, the fasting is full of ups and downs. You'd think that you'd just start off getting hungry and then get progressively hungrier throughout the day until you're completely famished and starving at the time to break your fast.

That's not my experience at all. It's completely an up and down rollercoaster. If I stay busy, I'm not hungry. If I start sitting around dwelling on how I feel, I'm hungry. I think much of the "hunger" is actually just my body used to its rhythms responding to getting off rhythm. It's not true hunger.

Anyway, as I said, the least hungry I felt all day was after my workout... which was the point when I should have, logically, been the most hungry.

Fasting is very interesting.

The longer you go fasting, the easier it becomes. Your body just gets fully switched over to using fat stores to fuel the ATPs instead of blood glucose.

Been watching calories for about 9 days now and lost about 5lbs. I was eating more than I thought.

Did nothing but abs and lower back today then played racquetball for an hour. Feeling good.

That has been my exact experience. I have no problem whatsoever going to the gym and working out with no food or water. However, I do run better, faster, and longer when I have some water and some fuel in me about 10 minutes before starting.

There should be no performance decrease due to fasting:

Then it's a total coincidence. I'm into the 2+ mile runs every time out so that's probably what it is. I've actually always thought that was bullshit but I struggled so much yesterday I thought maybe that was it.

I would wonder if you were doing some crazy endurance activity like an Ironman Tri if the results would be the same. In a Tri, though, even a psychological advantage would be worthwhile in getting you through the thing.

Silock 03-02-2010 08:27 PM

No, it wouldn't. At some point, you'll run out of muscle glycogen and you NEED the carbs if you are to continue. You'll definitely hit a performance wall without them. But for regular workouts and shorter activities, it's not a problem.

As far as hunger goes, I typically feel less hungry as the day goes on. But, I definitely see a decline in my performance at the gym. It doesn't bother me if I am doing cardio, but if I am lifting, I am not as strong, nor can I do as many reps. I can do cardio first thing in the morning on an empty stomach and go for a long time.

SenselessChiefsFan 03-03-2010 06:33 AM

Speaking of going for a long time, I was in the gym for two hours last night. I find that if I go early, I can find all sorts of exercises to fill the time. I did chest/triceps/shoulders/abs. Today is my day off, but I am going to go in and do some more abs, do light work on the bench 25% of my max, and maybe do some cardio.
