I am happy that Pioli was hired, because he gives the Chiefs instant credibility around the league that other potential GMs would not have.

However, he wasn't my top choice, and I won't simply just give him a free pass just because he's Scott Pioli.

So far, in the short time he's been on the job, I am pleased with the way he's handled things, and happier than a hog farmer in shit that he, and Clark, fired Herman ****ing Edwards.

However, if he brings in Mike Shannahan (most overrated head coach in the last 30 years) or Paul Pasqualoni as HC (59 years old, and spotty record at Syracuse), then I will be pissed.

Would like to see your reasoning for the overrated comment.

Without John Elway, Terrell Davis, and Alex Gibbs, the Rat has been pretty mediocre.

That's pretty obvious, but wouldn't it apply to say Jeff Fisher? I mean, I know he hasn't won a Super Bowl or anything, but he hasn't done much without Steve McNair as well. Mike Holmgren, who also won a SB with Brett Farve, haven't won anything, with the exception of making it with Matt Hasselback, but still, didn't win a SB.

I think what really is his downfall is that his inability to put together a solid defensive staff.

I think, while he's a great coach, that I am a little nervous about his playoff record AJE (After John Elway). 1-4 playoff record in 5 playoff games.

That would be another argument that he's overrated.

Great coaches hire good people.

Edit:One could also argue that Jeff Fisher and his staff developed a real raw QB in McNair, and that he actually did his best work when the team purged the roster because of the salary cap.

Me, I'm not a fan of Fisher, but I would take him over the Rat any day, and twice on Sunday.

True. But i think a Shanny/Pioli team is at least intriguing.

If Shanny is just allowed to coach and let Pioli handle the personel, that could be successful.

Name me one coach who IS good without a good QB, RB, and competent coaching staff.

The point is that Shanahan had a couple of good coaches, most notably Alex Gibbs, but he failed to put together a competent staff on the defensive side of the ball.

The HC puts together his staff, so if he fails to hire good people that failure is on him, and him alone.

Brian Billick won a SB with Trent Dilfer, and Bill Belicheck won a SB with Antwain Smith at RB.

Jon Gruden won one with Brad Johnson.

Since he was in charge of procuring the talent, that blame falls on his own shoulders.

SAUTO 01-24-2009 10:30 AM

even without elway, shannahan was 91-69 which is still miles better than perm

9-7 in 1998, and then 8-8 in 1999.

Carroll may or may not have gotten a fair shake as a coach. Bobby Grier's drafts were TERRIBLE, and we were way over the cap.

Could Pete Carrol be his "ace up his sleive" for coach? Just asking? But, just because he was at NE doesn't mean he has a relationship with Pioli????

Yes!!!

But, ususlly the coach chooses his staff and if he chooses poorly then he is not a good coach. The coach chooses who will play and how he coaches. I know top talent really helps that process.

And Marty won 100 games in the 90s.

What's your point?

Just to push some buttons . . . Mary did pretty good with Steve Bonehead and Elvis Grbac at QB, and Cunningham at DC (*ducks under desk*)

I think a really talented QB will help him or any other coach win a SB. Without one, the team has to have an outstanding defense to win a SB.
And, Shanny will not develop an outstanding defense.

I'd rather have another coach. Don't like the idea of the Rat being here. But, if the list is only those lised in the article in the Star ... I'd rather have the Rat ... if he agrees to work closely with Pioli. Since, he knows QB's he probably could help us draft a QB.

I hope Pioli has an ace up his shirt or somewhere????

Not terrible.

Mediocre.

Sure, he's won some games in the regular season, but his teams have been remarkably bad overall in the playoffs for the last ten years.
