Rooney Rule still in play for Chiefs

It hasn’t come up, and it might not. But if it should, here’s the answer to a question that some have posed since the Kansas City Chiefs hired general manager Scott Pioli on Wednesday.

Pioli’s meetings with Chiefs coach Herm Edwards don’t meet the requirements of the Rooney Rule, which mandates that NFL teams interview at least one minority head-coaching candidate.

The interpretation of the Rooney Rule is that teams can’t meet with an incumbent minority for the purpose of creating a vacancy and claim that they have followed the rule. The rule isn’t followed unless a legitimate minority candidate is interviewed.

It’s permissible for Pioli to fire Edwards, but it isn’t permissible for him to hire, say, Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz without first interviewing at least one minority head-coaching candidate.

Pioli said Wednesday that he plans to meet with Edwards before making any decisions about whom the Chiefs’ head coach will be. If Pioli retains Edwards, this point is moot. But if Pioli moves in another direction, he and the Chiefs still must comply with the Rooney Rule.

so Fire Herm. then allow him to interview.

so i'll take him at his word.

Yep, long time poster despite his allegiance to a foreign team. No reason for him to BS us.

If this is accurate, imagine the increase in the level of scorn that Chiefs' fans who live in Denver will endure.

I just wasn't aware that you could interview head coach candidates while you still had a head coach in place.

Not good. I don't have a problem with it. Coach is good and tough so bring it. I have nothing but respect for the man and his ability. It just sucks that things had run their course here.

Anyone else feel confused? I bet this is how a gay person feels. They don't know if they should accept and embrace or continue to fight the feeling. I like Shanahan as a coach, just not our coach.

Ok...I'll shut my mouth. STFU :)

I don't believe this rumor. Having said that, despite my own feelings, the sense of shock and awe that this would level on the Broncos and their fans would almost be worth it to me. Here's a segment from this morning's Denver ComPost with a mailbag for Woody Paige. KC's not even on their radar:

The reaction in Denver would be priceless to me.

This makes absolutely no sense. If Herm was fired, his $4 million would not be jeopardized by telling anyone he wishes that he was fired.
