No, it's Ok, but nothing great. Watch Life is Beautiful instead.

I've enjoyed every Charlie Chaplin film I've watched more than "The Artist."

I think The Artist is underrated at this point, seeing as how the only thing people say about it is that it was a terrible choice for Best Picture. It is a fine film, IMO, and people forget that.

Pasta Little Brioni 02-26-2015 09:33 AM

So it's awful

It was a weak year or the rest of the nominees were weak that year. It happens

It was the weakest year in recent memory, I think. I think A Separation was the best film of that year. I also liked Hugo, Take Shelter, Tree of Life, and Martha Marcy May Marlene about as much as I did The Artist.

Dude. Get over it. The Academy Awards are designed to be awards from the film industry to their peers. It's a big ****ing commercial and it's highly political. Why do you care so much who wins? To roughly quote Jack Nicholson when asked what he thought about the Oscars:

"It's good for who it's good for, and it's not bad for anybody."

Those tendencies are active in me too. I can count on one hand the number of movies about writing that I enjoy, but I get a visceral punch at almost anything involving stage performance. Even season 1 of Glee gets to me.

Maybe it's because the act of writing is largely personal whereas acting is performance based. That, and probably no good movie can really capture the process of writing, because if it did it would be interminable and boring as hell.

As an actor, I can't say I particularly love movies about acting. What I loved about Birdman was that it used the idea of an acting career to examine this guys self-loathing and regret. I liked that it used performance as a nearly spiritual exercise for him to come to terms with his life. The acting part might have made it more accessible to me, but I think that's it.

Oh, I don't. But I enjoy pointing out how much bullshit it is.

The main reason it's bullshit is injecting competition into an artist endeavor is lunacy. It's all completely subjective. Plus, how do you adequately compare Birdman to Boyhood to Selma? You don't. They are what they are. I might like one more than the next, but trying to actually award a film the title of "best picture" is asinine. It's fun to watch famous people get dressed up and talk about their work. It's fun to reflect on a year of filmmaking. (Some years more than others) But why people get so worked up over it all is beyond me.

Its fun to look back over time and see what films got snubbed, but hold up better over time than films that won.

For instance, Kramer Vs Kramer over Apocalypse Now

Ordinary People over Raging Bull

Chariots of Fire over Raiders of the Lost Ark

Just a few examples....im sure there are numerous others...

This was probably one of the dumbest movies I have ever seen-it is bad.

Stupid drums playing off beat through the whole show.

Could be one of the Worst of all time-perplexed how this won for Best Everything in the World?????

Horrible!!

I didn't know anything about you. Now I know everything.

This movie was so far up its own ass it was disgusting.
I enjoyed parts of it but as a whole, it was very VERY boring.
How many times did I need to see the same hallway? FFS I thought my internet crashed during one scene. They held the camera on a long hallway view for like, 30 seconds.

They had a good idea but it just did not deliver. Not the worst movie I've seen but not deserving of so many awards, either.
