The war against antibiotics has been a strange trip for me here... while I well understand that overuse is counter-productive, for years and years when I've gotten severe chest colds thick with hacked up glowing green gunk?

Different docs always give up a 5 day antibiotic pack for that, and its been working for years... they've never had an adverse affect I can point to, then again I only get truly sick about every 2 years or so

Antibiotics infrequently used are some of the best illness cures ever made

Green gunk doesn't always equal bacterial infection. You don't get any real adverse reactions from taking antibiotics without needing them they just tend to stop working when you do actually need them. You may have gotten better just because the illness ran it's course.

I've ignored any real healthcare in similar situations many times, and treatment always fixes it much faster

Basically the good bacteria in your gut is wiped out C. Diff takes over and you shit your guts out. Horrible smell too. It can be caused by taking antibiotics for too long.

It's just a bit dangerous in the long run is all.

There isn't much out there that can reliably kill 100% of any bacteria. So you take a round of antibiotics and it kills off most of the bacteria that's causing you problems, but not all of them. Those that survive are now better equipped to fight off the antibiotics that you used, then they replicate and then their "offspring" are also better equipped to deal with said antibiotics. That can potentially create some superbugs that can't be cured by antibiotics in the future.

Anyone with more knowledge on the subject can feel free to correct me but that's the explanation I've been given..

Is that the same as staying at a Holiday Inn Express last night?

Asking for a friend . . . .

You clearly mean well, and theres no need to disparage your knowledge on this.... but I'll side with the actual doctors, this last one has been my doc since 2010

He fixes me right up every 2-3 years

It's not a "War against antibiotics." It's simple biology and evolution. Saying they've never had an adverse effect is completely backwards thinking. The point of medicine is never to "Not have an adverse effect." It's intended to actually treat something specific. And it's not medicine until it's proven to directly treat something with evidence of results.

"Glowing green gunk" is meaningless. You have to know exactly what the gunk is to treat it. Which your doctor would test to find out, he wouldn't simply throw random shit at it and hope it worked. Like I said, antibiotics aren't effective on anything but bacterial infection. It's completely worthless against any virus like the common cold or flu. Taking antibiotics infrequently when you don't actually have an infection is dangerous and stupid. Learn a little biology, you will live longer.
