It's possible but I doubt it being that he's now a 6 year veteran.

What does that have to do with anything?

Again I haven't seen the numbers but he's been a Chief for 5+ years now. Obviously they like what he does better than we do. I have no idea what else he was offered but I'm sure his contract will hit the top 51.

Not a bad strategy, considering that there's not that much reason for our defense to have the greatest run-stuffing D when we have the lead so often, and teams usually have to pass to keep/catch up.

Also bolsters the idea that Veach is indeed hunting for some real weapons for the offense.

The Chiefs were 8th best in rush yards given up per game, only 108 yards. That's because they were 4th in rushing attempts against. The three teams with fewer attempts against have the best yards per rush given up, Tenn, Balt and SF, excellent run defenses. Chiefs were middle of the pack in yards per rush.

This shows teams don't run against the Chiefs because the Chiefs offense pressures them to throw. Hence it's smart to under resource the DT position.

It sounds like they plan on using the veteran's exception with him? I don't really know much about how it works but somebody said his base salary could be as low as like $900K next year.

Thanks for the data.

I was a little concerned after we lost Saunders, but he was never great vs. the run anyway. He was probably about average. And as I said before, I really don't think the DL has to do any better than what they did last season and it'll be fine. Just don't fall back in a significant way. And who really cares if some team wants to run against us? Not one of those teams in the AFC will probably make the playoffs anyway.

He had a bad year. Admittedly. That said he's solid. I fully expect a rebound year...

Vet minimum and the VSB adjusts depending on years of service time.

Wouldn't be shocking if 6 yrs puts him into the top 51 by default.

This is the kind of analysis that makes me happy to pay the $99 annual CP membership fee. Good work.

Haha right on JH. Teach a man to fish. Here's an excellent site for detailed team stats by category. For instance in this case rushing defense, one of 14 categories, is broken down 9 different ways. Really good stuff. Enjoy!

It also makes sense that the Chiefs would do whatever it takes to keep CJ, easily the best pass rusher at DT in the league, since they should emphasize pass rush at the position. That's amplified by their chief rivals (see what I did) being pass-centric teams.

I compiled the total number for snaps for all the defensive linemen. Some conclusions.
  • Of course like most other NFL teams, the Chiefs use many different alignments and personnel groups, depending on situation. The positional titles of DT and DE are somewhat arbitrary.
  • The Chiefs nominal defensive ends take more snaps than nominal defensive tackles. Jones alone takes almost half of the snaps of nominal defensive tackles.
  • Some of the "Nnadi is the worst ever" talk is hyperbole. He took more snaps, and played a higher percentage of downs when he was available, than many of other players on the DL.
  • I'm glad to have him back at the price until we can find someone better.

Defensive Tackles
Name/Snaps/percent of available played
Jones 915 80%
Wharton 149 44%
Saunders 421 39%
Nnadi 388 34%
Williams 83 24%
Stallworth 53 14%
Shelton 9 12%
Total: 2018

Defensive ends
Name/Snaps/percent of available played
Clark 717 69%
Karlaftis 730 64%
Danna 471 54%
Dunlap 572 50%
Henning 88 19%
Total: 2578
