You make a fair point. I didn't think he was a bad person until he started wishing death on a fellow member on this site who is battling a terminal lung condition.

Actually - if she broke her back and is that badly injured death might be a better option than living at this point. It's not like her husband is gonna be at her side. Her family would probably resent caring for her after all she's brought on herself. Let her die. That's kinda what she wanted.

I'm not suggesting this as a perfect option. The whole thing is terribly sad. But when people want to die, why do we keep bringing them back? Is that really humane?

I don't need counseling because of internet posts. I'm a perfectly well-adjusted individual. I helped a couple of old ladies I had never seen before in my life get a bag of frozen okra down from a high shelf at the supermarket yesterday.

Yeah. You need help. You can't separate reality from "the internet". It's as if you believe the internet is some fake place where other people don't exist so you can do and say whatever you wish.

I'm almost certain you wouldn't have approached her husband on the street to invite him into a full bar where you and all your "friends" were laughing and carrying on about how badly his slutty wife screwed him over.

Hammock Parties 03-09-2011 03:43 PM

I should have hooked them up with the kindly 80-year old guy who goes to my gym. We shared a conversation yesterday, mostly in which I attempted to make him feel awesome about loving Fox News and hating liberals. Unfortunately I got a creepy vibe from him:

I can understand that line of thinking if a person sending the request was involved personally and impacted in some way by her behavior. But, I don't understand why someone who is not would do such a thing just for self-gratification and "look at me!? Aren't I cool!?" interweb "fun."

That's fair. I'm a pretty wild and crazy guy. I have no problem embarrassing somebody for my own entertainment - even strangers. But I wouldn't bring myself to attempt to interject myself into that situation unless it were for professional reasons related to my newspaper.

How is it significantly different than registering at a message board in order to post in a train wreck thread, for example?

I'm not sure what you are specifically referencing (if anything), but the significant difference between the two is abundantly clear:

Posting on a thread and making silly comments does not intentionally enter the "real world."

Sending an invitation for the husband to come here does. Sending the wife Facebook friend requests does.

Well, because one way is anonymous entertainment and the other is crashing into somebody's life uninvited. Worse than uninvited.

I'm with you on the husband thing. Clay's pretty clearly going over the edge (from what I've read here, this is somewhat cyclical for him) and is probably just a few stupid posts away from another banning.

But I'm not getting the friend request as an issue. It's not as if she's required to accept them, after all, and she is not an innocent party (at least reportedly).

How is making a friend request an attempt to try to hurt a person? I don't use Facebook, so I'm unfamiliar with this method of torture.

Also, isn't what you're saying here pretty much what I was saying about the train wreck threads?

A friend request is exactly like knocking on somebody's door. The very same thing. Would you go knock on the door of somebody (either party) involved with this situation and say - hey, let me watch the train-wreck. Can I come inside?

Perhaps I'm giving the sender of the request too much credit. I'm sure that they did so thinking that she would get them and be happy.

I already explained to you the difference between reaching out to either the husband or the wife and this thread.

Perhaps your assigning a moral position where there isn't one. If she wishes for privacy, she can merely deny the requests.

If I'm wrong about her being able to deny them, please let me know.

You asked how is making a friend request an attempt to hurt a person. It's what they plan on doing if they happened to be accepted as friends.

It's really just called being a decent human being and some people seem to struggle with doing that.

No, not in the slightest. By asking for FB friendship you're asking to be allowed in the inner circle. It's akin to asking the family to observe in her hospital room for jollies even though you didn't know her. Might as well ask her mother for a go at her while she's "under".
