Prolly will get burned by this but Barkley reminded me a little bit of Drew Brees, shorter really accurate from short the medium range, but has just enough arm strength to throw it long.

Curious Dane , who are you leaning toward?

I've seen far more of Barkley than I have Geno Smith, so that may be a little unfair, but quite frankly, Smith has been underwhelming to me, especially the past several weeks. His decision making has been suspect and Kansas State shut him down.

I realize that it's unfair to make a judgement at this point on Smith, so I have to give him an Incomplete. But at this point in time, before Bowl season, before the Combines, before we know who will be the GM and head coach of the Chiefs and which offensive system they'll run (although it'll likely be the WCO for either Smith or Barkley), I give the edge to Barkley.

I think that Barkley will be a solid, if not spectacular, NFL QB at this juncture. Again, that's subject change, especially after the Combine.

Barkley's ceiling may not be as high as Geno's but he can be an immediate starter and difference maker. Geno may get there someday and maybe he won't. He'll need a ton more coaching, IMO.

DJ's left nut 11-04-2012 05:00 PM

He looked solid last night.

I still think he has a Matt Schaub ceiling, though and would be ideally suited for a west-coast scheme.

If the Chiefs take him and surround him with plus talent, they can win with him. But they're not going to be able to take him and surround him with mediocre talent that he makes better (i.e. the Rodgers, Manning, Brady, Brees class).

I'd still prefer Smith because I think he has more upside. Wilson and Bray might have more upside as well. That said, I could ultimately live with Barkley because I just can't see him being a bad quarterback. We'd have a guy that doesn't take anything off the table for the next decade and as he matures, because of his background, he could even be one of those 'pressure' players that steps up when needed.

Not my favorite choice, but an acceptable one.

DeezNutz 11-04-2012 05:03 PM

The '13 draft class doesn't look to have the upside of an historic class such as the '04 one, but the former does look to have a similarly high basement, which is pretty damn good from where I sit.

O.city 11-04-2012 05:05 PM

DJ I wanna like bray. I've tried

But he just seems like a douche kid with great physical talents.

Also, after watching all his games this year I think Barkley is more physically gifted than he gets credit for. I know it's been said but he reminds me of a slightly shorter Matt Ryan at this point. He arm strength which was my only question, seems like it isn't a problem.

Barkley's height may be a bit of an issue though. Ryan can get on top of the ball and fire down into intermediate zones whereas Barkley's height may keep him from doing that as often.

That deep ball doesn't impress me as it is impressing a lot of guys here. He had enough room to throw his entire body into that and was able to get it downfield. That throw in that situation happens on hail mary's and that's about it. Otherwise we're still talking about the ability to get the ball moving with a quick release and high velocity. I still didn't see much of that last night.

He didn't display 'practical' arm strength with that throw.

As for Bray, I'm still not sure. He's my favorite physical talent in the draft but his feet really are awful sometimes and yeah, there's some Cutler to the boy. I dunno. He's the biggest risk/reward pick to be had if he comes out, IMO.

It was billed as being pretty good with Eli and Rivers being viewed as franchise QBs and Roethlisberger being a possible franchise QB. The thing that class has over this one is the fact it is not following a draft with two elite QB prospects, with one being billed as the best since Elway. That is why this class seems more underwhelming than it really is. This is actually an excellent class and might go down as one of the best in the last 20+ years.

Titty Meat 11-04-2012 05:16 PM

If USC isn't lying about Barkley's size he'll be the same as Aaron Rogers. Figure out why he's throwing some of those stupid picks this year correct that and he's a damn good QB.

Barkley has shown heart lately which is a concern with USC QB's.

Barkley reminds me a bit of a Stafford without the huge arm.

Shit...I think this is a pretty goddamn good QB class, even if some of the juniors don't come out.

Smith and Barkley both look like legitimate franchise level QB's, with Smith's potential ceiling being All-Pro.

Nassib, Glennon, Manuel (who's really playing well right now) and Jones (who has all the tools and could be had on the cheap after being touted for years as a first rounder) are all solid prospects.

Bunch of sleepers in there too such as Carder, Sorensen, Dysert and Klein.

Throw in the juniors and this is a ridiculous QB class.

No doubt that this class looks to be outstanding. The thing that is holding back "experts" from seeing this is because the top QBs (Smith, Barkley, Wilson) are not viewed on the same level as Luck, RGIII, and to an extent Tannehill. I do think from top to bottom this will be a better class even if the top QBs in this one might not be at the level of the top ones of the last draft.

One of his WRs stopped on the route in the endzone to complain about a call and thus the DB made the INT, not Barkley's fault, he also had a WR drop a TD

True, but he's doing exactly what you'd want to see a Junior do, especially one that we all know is something of a project.

He's getting better as the season progresses.

Honestly, I stay in if I'm him. If he continues to move forward next year like he has this year, he'll rocket up draft boards and into #1, IMO.

USC Trojans QB Matt Barkley: The Anti-Leinart
4 Comments

By Chris Mahr

The moment that quarterback Matt Barkley announced that he would be returning to USC for his senior season last December, the comparisons with Trojans predecessor Matt Leinart were discussed more than ever. Two Orange Country-reared, golden boy signal-callers bypassing on NFL riches for a shot at a national title.

Yet closer examination yields more differences than similarities.

Leinart was going for a second consecutive BCS title, while Barkley is pursuing his first.

Leinart seemed less-than-engaged in the non-football side of his USC experience, taking ballroom dancing as his only class during his senior season. Barkley is also only taking one class — on the infiltration of data servers and security websites (huh?) — and designed a free mobile app in a social media class last semester to promote USC football.

Leinart used his “top dawg” status as Trojans QB to mix it up with Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson. Barkley, meanwhile, is proudest of his friendship with 92-year-old Louie Zamperini, a former USC track star whose stunning WWII survival story is the subject of a best-selling book, Unbroken.

Leinart broke up with then girlfriend Brynn Cameron, the mother of his son Cole Cameron Leinart, shortly before Cole’s birth in October 2006 and was rumored to be dating Paris Hilton. Barkley met his long-term girlfriend, Brittany Langdon, when they were in the same kindergarten class. (Their parents did not let them date until they were 16.)

The biggest, most important difference between the two are their personalities. Leinart always seemed distant, overly conscious of his place atop the college football world and arrogant as a result of it.

Barkley, meanwhile, is the exact opposite.

When the sanctions rained down on the Trojans in 2010, no one would have blamed Barkley — coming off his freshman season — for jumping ship and starting his career elsewhere. He was bred for success, having started at QB in every game he’s dressed for since middle school.

Not only did he stay, he helped keep the USC program afloat.

Lee Jenkins’ excellent story on him for Sports Illustrated’s 2012 College Football Preview documents how Barkley called Trojans recruits to convince them to stay even after Pete Carroll’s departure for the Seahawks. He became both a public (for the camera) and private (for teammates) figurehead for USC’s resolution through their two-year bowl ban.

Think back to how Matt Leinart took the reins in the early-2000s. While he set an unprecedented standard of QB play at USC, he was cooking with a full cupboard, surrounded by stars like Reggie Bush, LenDale White, Mike Williams, Dwayne Jarrett and Steve Smith. With the gift of hindsight, can you honestly say that Leinart would have been capable of rallying his team and program in the face of adversity? Probably not.

Leinart opted to stay for his senior season because he wanted to have more fun (and perhaps because he knew he would never be as successful in the NFL as he was in college). While Barkley is clearly relishing one more year of college, his return feels different. It also seems driven by his desire to see the fruits of his labor, the final bricks of a reconstruction project he helped break ground on in 2010.

He hasn’t pumped his chest about it. He doesn’t try and make it an excuse as to why he’s a better human being than all of us. What Barkley has accomplished is far more impressive. He’s turned USC into a team that non-Trojan fans and non-frontrunners can root for.

I dare Matt Leinart to claim that he ever did that.

I know how badly you guys want a franchise QB but they don't come out every year. You guys would be much better off using that pick on an impact player than wasting the pick on the next Rex Grossman.

Elway wasn't happy with Denver's QB situation last year and he didn't go out and draft Gabbert or Locker with the #2 pick. He chose the best player available and look at where Denver is at now.

Okay then, who do the Chiefs get as QB next year? Another loser veteran? Sorry, but I'm not going to take every word that these "expert" say as gold because there is always at least ONE QB from every draft class that ends up shocking everyone. Whoever the Chiefs GM will be, it's his job to figure out who that guy is and get him. There is absolutely no other option.

There isn't a Luck or RGIII in 80% of draft classes.

Go and get a guy like Hassleback, trade Bowe for future picks, draft somebody in round 1 who will be an elite player at his position for years to come and then do whatever it takes to get your franchise QB the next time one comes around.

That would be much smarter than drafting a QB who you know probably won't pan out.

You guys ****ing fell ass over tea kettle into Peyton Manning. Without him you would be struggling for your playoff lives against the ****ing Chargers and Raiders.

RealSNR 11-08-2012 08:09 PM

If you draft a QB in the first round and it doesn't work out, your team is poised to continually suck. When a better QB comes around, you'll already be in position.

If you draft a player you like with that top spot instead, your team will gradually improve out of the ashes to 6-10/7-9ish territory, forever consigned to pick DTs, OTs, WRs, and all the other slap dick positions. Occasionally the team will be in a position to settle for Ryan Tannehill-type prospects. Some of those will work out, some of them won't. Either way you slice it, you won't BE in a position to get a top QB when one comes around.

If you're going to go for the best QB you can find, it's far better to draft a guy and live with his failures and remain in suckville.

Like the Falcons did with Matt Ryan?

Where are you getting this bullshit that 2013's class sucks? The Donks were only ever in a position to go draft Blaine Gabbert or Jake Locker, and supposedly already had a QB on the roster that your then-coach really liked in Tim Tebow. That's why you dumbasses didn't take a QB at #2.

Where's Von Miller this year? I don't ****ing see him either. I also don't see Blaine Gabbert or another shitty prospect. I see three guys either at or better than the ability of Matt Ryan. Close e****ingnough for me.

I still think I'd rather have Bray than Barkley

Bray would be insane to declare this year. He'd be the 4th guy off the board I bet.

Go and get a guy like Hassleback, trade Bowe for future picks, draft somebody in round 1 who will be an elite player at his position for years to come and then do whatever it takes to get your franchise QB the next time one comes around.

You're so ****ing stupid that I'm actually impressed that you don't require assistance feeding yourself.

****ing. Moron.

Feels like a shot at Wilson.

That's the one thing that irks me about Wilson. He's always telling the media about how he is the leader, and "as the leader I have to..." blah blah blah. It's as if he feels the need to tell everyone how great of a leader he is.

I can't wait until Barkley and Geno are tearing shit up next year and making these haters shut the **** up.

guitarmy21b 11-08-2012 09:03 PM

I'm still undecided on who they should draft. I will say I don't like the idea of ruling out QB's because of past QB's who went to the same school. That's like passing on Sam Bradford because Jason White didn't get drafted. I think Barkley is the best bet right now. Geno hasn't been impressive since his early Heisman bid and Klein is another Tebow, although I think he might be slightly better at the pro level.

What if you draft a dud this year and then next year a legit prospect is sitting there for you? You aren't going to give up on a guy you picked in the top 5 after one season.

If Denver would have drafted Gabbert at #2 last year we wouldn't have gone after Peyton Manning.

I think you should just draft the best player available no matter what. You don't think the Rams knew that RG3 was a better player than Bradford? They were stuck with Bradford and were forced to trade the pick. Let other teams make the mistake and then trade up when there is a legit prospect.

Barkley is just a flat out stud

Titty Meat 11-10-2012 02:50 PM

What'd he do?

His receivers are studs. How long was the throw?
