how about you give us a new opinion/prediction? where do you think Geno goes now and when?

I'm actually more upset that we wasted those picks on Alex Smith now. We would have been in a position to get a quarterback today, be it Geno or Barkley. And we'll be in the same exact position a year from now, sitting in the second round, saying "wow, there's a really great player available but we gave this pick up for Alex ****ing Smith."

So the Jags will (possibly) get the LT that protected the freshman Heisman in the SEC and Geno Smith with their first two picks. Chiefs get a MAC LT and Alex Smith for 3 draft picks. Why are we laughing.

The argument that many really good QB's have been drafted in the 2nd and 3rd rounds lately was used by people skeptical of drafting Geno at 1, and dismissed by the Geno crowd. You can't have it both ways.

That's because it was assumed the QBs being drafted in those rounds were the likes of Zac Dysert, Matt Scott, and Landry Jones.

Not Geno Smith and Matt Barkley. Who are BOTH still available.

nope, wrong again, i'll go back and get it if you want, you neg repped me simply because you didn't like my opinion although i did give legitimate reasons or at least a legitimate opinion

my basic stance was that #1 was way over the top for Geno although i think he COULD still be a good or even great QB, i hoped for a trade down that still involved potentially grabbing Geno albeit at a later spot OR as it turned out a trade for another QB as a stop gap for a year or two while we find the franchise QB

alas, no hard feelings bro, it is what it is, i'll delete that other post if you like, just say the word

I still don't think #1 was over the top, because I don't think there's any real talent separation between the players available now and the players drafted in the top 10 yesterday. That's just the kind of draft that this was and is. Which is why not having a 2nd round pick is such a travesty.

A 2cd round QB was not and has not been good enough before. Why should that be good enough now?
Geno is not horrible but his chances of going to and or winning a SB dropped dramaticly now that he is a 2cd round QB. He was not a good enough quality of a QB to be drafted in the 1st.
The desperation for a QB along with stubborn bullheadedness around here has blurred a lot of judgement.

this is actually the final proof, even these draft dopes passed on him

bottom line is that he just simply isn't a 1st round draft pick, not with what he has showed so far ; that does NOT mean he won't go on to win SBs and have a HOF carreer, would be awesome if he did that in a red jersey and i ain't talking about the Cardinals

First round tackles don't win Superbowls. People who draft tackles number 1 overall do it to play it safe and go 8-8, 10-6.

If you believe their coaching staff and the staff's comments in the press, they are committed to Gabbert. That's what they say anyway.

Gabbert has never had any stability around him, they've had one offensive system after another, and they have a lot of holes on defense.

Sure, maybe they didn't expect Geno Fontaine to be available and will decide they can't pass on their next David Garrard, but I'd be a little surprised.

So not true. It's all timing and building a foundation. Makes more sense to draft a stud Tackle than a medicore QB. If Luck or RGIII type (or even Flacco) would have been there, the Chiefs would have drafted a QB. Now they have folks in place who can protect said QB.

Those guys on the QB side that wouldn't hear anything. Just wanted to curse and slam deserve a lot of distain for their actions along with the reality of where those QBs will be taken eventually.

It will be interesting to see whether Gabbert can be salvaged now that he'll have both Joeckel and Monroe protecting him. He always seemed to have a lot of trouble when pressured at Mizzou, but when he has time, he can be pretty impressive.

Yeah they PICKED that year and it is their fault. They have to pay more than there not being a QB worthy of the pick.

I've been reading this forum for about a month or so, and I must say - seems like like all the Geno supporters now are eating serious crow.

I'm a Texan fan myself and have nothing against the Chiefs. The Fisher selection seems solid even though people on here were pouting left and right not to get him. Fans here ARE passionate though and that's terrific.

ChiefBoyRDEE 04-26-2013 08:31 AM

AR prioritizes OT, DE, and CB along with QB

he obviously just didn't think Geno was the guy and apparently everyone else in the NFL agrees with him

don't be surprised to see a QB taken by AR in this draft, it ain't over yet

Obviously he hasn't shown much, but he is still only 23.

They outright rejected any and all Tebow talk with strong statements that Gabbert was their guy, and if Gabbert had been in this draft I don't think there is any question he'd have been the top QB selected.

Part of that is because when the QB gurus were and have been proven wrong they never backed off. They didn't learn any grace from being wrong multiple times while spewing hateful stuff all over the planet over and over. So they will not be given any for they do not deserve it. They didn't earn it because they have shown the same vial behavior to all.

That's where our philosophical difference lies. First I don't think Fisher's a stud (or Joeckel or Johnson). I think they're middling prospects available anywhere from 15 to 45 in every draft. Although that's really neither here nor there. Second, I think a 'mediocre,' as you put it, quarterback prospect has more draft value than a good line prospect, because the upside value potential is so much greater. Basically I think positional value is a real and key thing.

Obviously the league disagrees with me, but the league is also slow to change and extremely risk averse. Whereas I have nothing to lose if a player I like doesn't pan out.

And I think everyone is making the same mistake they always make at draft time, judging these picks immediately. You judge these picks in 4 or 5 years, as the players head into their second contracts. If Fisher's an all pro, it turns out that the pick was okay (I don't think I'll ever call it 'great', it's such a meh position to draft #1). If Joeckel or Johnson's a better tackle, then we picked the wrong horse. If Geno never sees the field, the league was right, and if he's a pro bowler, the league was wrong.

But, Baltimore is a solid organization from top to bottom that arguably evaluates talent better than any team in the league, that's why they won the Super Bowl.

But, Baltimore is a solid organization from top to bottom that arguably evaluates talent better than any team in the league, that's why they won the Super Bowl.

They won the superbowl because Flacco went all great QB on them. Something Alex Smith will never be able to do.

and they didn't have to spend 1.1 to get Flacco.

32 GM's and Coaches all agree that Geno wasn't first round worthy

Maybe the Chiefs will pick one in the near future:D

Nope, but they did spend a first rounder on him.

You don't just draft a QB in the first round to say that you have a 1st round QB. There has to be 1st round talent there.

Alex Smith was about a quarter away from playing in a Super Bowl himself. It's not crazy to think he could elevate his game just a bit and win two more games than he won a season or two ago. He has been playing at a fairly high level in the Harbaugh era.

Bullshit. All I ever said was that they shouldn't take him if they weren't sold on him as their franchise guy, and that it was a repeat of 2009 without Stafford, and you asshats were all over me.

And now you look as stupid as you were acting.

SNR is reaching Frankie "broke in mid-air" levels anything to correct.

That season of dump offs and playing in the worst division in football was his ceiling.

You have to contextualize the Akili Smith stuff. It started with Pro Football Weekly's scouting report of him, which was posted on ESPN's site.

QB Geno Smith, #12
West Virginia
PFW Grade: 5.39

Ht: 6-23/8 | Wt: 218 | Sp: 4.59 | Arm: 321/2 | Hand: 91/4

Notes: His cousin, Melvin Bratton, was a star running back for the Miami Hurricanes in the late 1980s. The Florida prep was a Parade All-American selection after throwing for over 3,000 yards and 32 touchdowns. Saw limited action in five games as a true freshman in 2009, completing 32-of-49 passes for 309 yards (65.3 percent) with one touchdown and one interception while playing through a broken fifth metatarsal in his left foot for part of the season. Took over as the starter in ’10 and tossed 241-372-2,763-24-7 (64.8) in 13 starts. Was the first West Virginia QB in 12 years to throw for over 2,500 yards in a season. Garnered heavy recognition for ’11 season, setting the Big East Conference and school mark for passing yards with 346-526-4,385-31-7 (65.8), in addition to becoming the first Mountaineer QB in history and only the second Big East player to surpass 4,000 yards in a season in 13 starts. Named Orange Bowl MVP after throwing for 407 yards and six touchdowns against Clemson. Set the school record and led the Big 12 Conference in touchdown passes in ’12 after tossing 369-518-4,205-42-6 (a conference-leading 71.2) in 13 starts. Threw for 656 yards and eight touchdowns in a 70-63 shootout victory against Baylor. Had a 26-13 record in 39 career starts.

Positives: Has a strong arm and can rifle the ball with good velocity into tight windows. Can throw with accuracy on the move and layer the deep ball. Good overall accuracy, ball placement and touch, especially on the fade route. Throws a very catchable ball — spins it tightly. Good escapability — can sidestep the rush, find an open throwing window and extend plays with his feet when needed. Outstanding straight-line speed — clocked the best 40-yard time (4.56 seconds) and broad jump (10-foot-4) of any quarterback at the Combine. Very durable, experienced, three-year starter — overcame an average offensive line, has never missed any time to injury and will play through pain.

Negatives: Operated an offense where he received adjustments from the sidelines and was often out of sync with receivers. Average field vision and coverage recognition — forces throws and does not work through progressions. Takes unnecessary sacks and does not feel pressure well. Not an elusive scrambler. Shaky lower-body mechanics — does not stand tall in the pocket (crouches, hops, dances and elevates to his toes when he throws). Has pin legs and bad pocket posture. Operated almost exclusively from the gun. Not a student of the game. Nonchalant field presence — does not command respect from teammates and cannot inspire. Mild practice demeanor — no urgency. Not committed or focused — marginal work ethic. Interviewed poorly at the Combine and did not show an understanding of concepts on the white board. Opted not to compete at the Senior Bowl and has approached offseason training as if he has already arrived and it shows in his body with minimal muscle definition or strength. Has small hands and glaring ball security issues (32 career fumbles). Really struggled handling the snow in Pinstripe Bowl (took two safeties) and will be troubled by the elements. Needed to be coddled in college — cannot handle hard coaching.

Summary: Started the season red-hot with the help of two playmaking receivers and created a national stir generating a lot of overexcitement in the scouting community. Quickly came down to earth after Kansas State disguised coverages and brought pressure he could not handle and he finished dropping six of his final eight games. A cross between Akili Smith and Aaron Brooks, Smith is a gimmick, overhyped product of the system lacking the football savvy, work habits and focus to cement a starting job and could drain energy from a QB room. Will be overdrafted and struggle to produce against NFL defensive complexities.
NFL projection: Top-50 pick.

I think you're misunderstanding what I'm saying. I'm saying that part of my rationale for having him at #1 was that I don't think there are any can't-miss star players in this draft (including him). I think if you shift the entire round from yesterday around, just shake it up and let the names fall to whichever team, it wouldn't make any difference at all, meaning I do not think there's very much of a dropoff from the players taken in the top-5 to the players taken at the end of the round. Which is, coincidentally, why I desperately wanted us to trade down (but expected that we couldn't, because...who would anybody trade up to #1 for...). And I think there are still players on the board now who fall into that group as well, including both Geno and Barkley. I think we're going to sorely regret not having that 34th pick, if only because I think it would have tremendous trade value.
