Compensatory picks are not automatic or guaranteed. To make sure they got a pick for Bowe, whoever the GM is would have to work the system, only sign about 3 free agents, and then load up on guys who were cut by their prior team.

In other words, do what Pioli did this past offseason to keep the pick for Carr. But sitting back, being clever, and cherry-picking guys who won't cost you a pick is a lot easier to do with the mindset of "Hey, we just missed the playoffs and we'll be getting some of our best players back".

After an abortion like this season, trying to work within the parameters of keeping a compensatory pick would be like handcuffing yourself.
