I agree, and I genuinely hate the idea of losing Gordon or Zobrist.
But, when you look at the totality of things, it's just the right decision - and I don't have any spite for the club making the decision.

I'm sure many will just insist that it's the Royals being cheap, but they did just win the World Series. Maybe they know what all is going on just a little bit more than some casual fan who jumped on only once they were good .

Also, yes. Farm system needs MAJOR replenishment. If for nothing else than look at what Moore did midseason to get the final pieces of the World Champions!

I think I heard last night from someone on Baseball Tonight (talking to their guys at the meeting) that the Royals were willing to go to 5/$90 with Alex, but that was our ceiling. If we're willing to go there, I could see him taking that bait, even if there's a bit more money elsewhere to stay home. My guess is we've told him what we're willing to do, he's waiting for the OF market to clarify, then he'll have to decide if he's willing to take less to stay.

I could live with losing Zobrist if it wasn't to the Mets. That irks me.

We have to operate under the assumption that signing players well into their thirties is bad business. If we play the game thinking that giving out big contracts to aging stars is the way to win, there are only two possible outcomes:

1. We're wrong, and teams with young rosters kick our asses.

2. We're right, and teams with big payrolls kick our asses.

Either way, it's a losing proposition.

Would you rather him go to someone in our division? At least he's not in the same league and not in STD Louis .

I really believe this has been the plan all along. We just have too many good players. That's the problem of having the deep lineup we had.

The risk there is obviously that guys like Hos and Moose might still walk and then you're left hanging. But even a mid market team can't sustain nine starters all making 10-20 million a year. But if you have to dish out a couple $20m/year deals, doing it for guys in their late 20s makes more sense.

More importantly, contracts for all the 2017 FA group will partially be covered by the new TV contract. Gordon and Zobrist won't be.

You're right of course, I just have a newly formed distaste for the Mets. And I don't like that I won't be able to completely hate them when they come to our World Series ceremony next season. I'll have to reserve some love for Zobrist in a Mets uni.

Clearly it would be bad business to take this approach overall. Gordon, however, may be a unique case.

It is ****ing stupid for the Cardinals to get Gordon. Makes zero sense with that roster. Just going off reports.

Reminds me of this tweet from Andy McCullough earlier this year -

Told Ned Yost someday he'll look as good as I do. "I'm already past that," he said. "I'm the third-most handsome manager in baseball."
— Andy McCullough (@McCulloughStar) April 15, 2015

Pedro Gomez is tweeting that the Giants are going after Gordon hard, and that the Royals aren't going to be able to keep up.

Why are the meetings in Nashville? It's a cold location and there's no effing team there. What are they doing?

The hotel in Nashville is apparently the largest hotel in the country that does not have a casino attached to it. Plenty of room for press, etc...and no stigma of gambling either.

Or the owners just like visiting the Grand Ole Opry.....

They have a convention where anything and everything baseball business related is going on. All the minor leagues and non-affiliated teams are there as well.
