There are plenty of things to bitch about relative to the Royals and David Glass. Our 1st round picks are a ways down the list IMO. That's all. If you wanted to bitch about our history drafting beyond round 1, I'll stand next to you holding the pitchfork. If you want to discuss the lack of commitment in our development of young players, I'm with you. Signing mediocre vets for entirely too much money? I'm there. Etc., etc.

BTW 4-3 KC top of 9th.

I don't think we're in much disagreement.

I don't either. It's hard to disagree about a team that's been a joke for the better part of two decades.

The first round pick hasn't been the problem, it's always been paying peanuts for everything after that. Now some of those top picks haven't panned out. But that's the MLB draft... it's not like the NFL or NBA. Even if you pay big money for guys, it's still a very difficult thing to evaluate.

Now, let's all get our rally caps on and pray that another 18 year old becomes a mega millionaire so I can pay $100+ dollars for my family to watch him play baseball!!

You're right that it's not the problem, but it's been one symptom of the larger problem. And frankly I hope this discussion is entirely moot in a few minutes.

I sincerely hope Hosmer gets signed. Big change for the organization, IMO.

I haven't followed along with this thread other than the last couple posts, but I'm not sure where you're going with that. We've given big money to Gordon, Moose, etc... gave Hochevar a big league contract. All a far cry from earlier this decade. I'm not sure what the big change would be.

Royals win 4-3 on a HUGE pick-off by Soria.

But did we lose Hosmer?

I mean the draft in its totality. Picks like Melville, etc., in addition to a big-money guy like Hosmer. And to be honest Hosmer might end up being the Royals most expensive pick ever, which, again, would speak volumes about their willingness to get a guy like Melville in the 4th. This seems to be an even stronger commitment to winning than what we've seen since '05.

I could give a crap about how expensive he is. We just need to draft good baseball players. Asking for a big signing bonus doesn't make you a good baseball player. Now the way he's playing, this might not be the case... but I don't think any of these guys were the prospect Alex Gordon was. That was the make-or-break guy, and we got it done, barely.

Sure. Throwing money around for the sake of spending isn't good business, of course. Let me put this another way: The year's draft suggests the team went for top talent, money be damned, throughout the draft. Who was last year's Melville, for example? This hasn't been the Royals way. It's just a fact that the best talent is generally the highest priced.

Gordon was a big-time prospect. No question. The obvious pick and they made it.

KevB 08-15-2008 10:13 PM

Yankees didn't sign their first round pick, Gerrit Cole. He's going to UCLA.

DeezNutz 08-15-2008 10:14 PM

Is there a decent source for the info. on the signings?

Yanks obviously don't care about winning. I keed.
