I used a telephoto lens and I think I was about 15 feet away from the goose when I took the pic. I opened it in some Canon RAW program and it automatically tweaked the colors and stuff for me. Anyhow, I'm wondering if it looks better cropped, with a less noticeable background, or if it looks better seeing all that blurred stuff.

Great photo! To me, the cropepd one looks neater, but IMO it depends on what you're using the photo for.

Took out the 50mm tonight to the Christmas lights. Sorta tough for a newbie to do w/out a tripod, but these are the best of what I got.

I upgraded from my old Sony Cybershot to a Nikon D3100 back in September. Here are some of the photos I've taken since then. Most are HDR photos because I like the way the technique works on these Western Kansas sunsets.

Just bought that today plus the 85mm f1.8, think they will work well with my 5D MkII. Gonna try to do some time lapse work.

My newest:

Look through the cosmic cloud cataloged as NGC 281 and it's almost easy to miss stars of open cluster IC 1590. But, formed within the nebula, that cluster's young, massive stars ultimately power the pervasive nebular glow. The eye-catching shapes looming in this portrait of NGC 281 are sculpted columns and dense dust globules seen in silhouette, eroded by intense, energetic winds and radiation from the hot cluster stars. If they survive long enough, the dusty structures could also be sites of future star formation. Playfully called the Pacman Nebula because of its overall shape, NGC 281 is about 10,000 light-years away in the constellation Cassiopeia. This composite image was made through narrow-band filters, but combines emission from the nebula's hydrogen, sulfur, and oxygen atoms in a visible spectrum palette. It spans over 80 light-years at the estimated distance of NGC 281.

Coronado Cross, just outside Fort Dodge KS

"On June 29, 1541, after much hardship, Francisco Vasquez de Coronado and his group crossed the Arkansas River (called the St. Peter & St. Paul River) near present day Fort Dodge, Kansas. Father Juan de Padilla held a mass of thanksgiving on the nearby hills, the first Christian service held in the interior of the continent, predating the landing of the Pilgrims almost 100 years."

This one took a while to get right. I really wanted the light to reflect off the grease without washing out the whole picture. Plus it took some maneuvering to get perfect composition with so many different figures drawing the eye at once. Notice how the slaw in in the upper right hand corner balances with the similarly round hushpuppies in the bottom left. They are bisected by dominant two chicken tenders as the fried shrimp in the bottom right attempt to pull the fries down along the tenders. Then there's the white Styrofoam backdrop, a Purgatory of sorts, lending a real sense of isolation to the whole piece. What results is a perfect, strange blend of calm and chaos. Not to brag, but this is one of my better works.

And for a little context if you want to add it. Its the Milky Way over the Delicate Arch in Moab Utah. It shows two late night rock climbers and the Summer Triangle overhead: Vega, Altair and Deneb.

The summer triangle are the 3 spiked stars middle left, Vega very high at the edge Altair down and to the right below the Milky Way and Deneb in the Milky Way to the Left with the North America Nebula and the Pelican Nebula visible next to it.

Is that what it actually looks like with the naked eye or does it take a special camera set up to get that image out?

That is simply awesome. I've made the hike to Delicate Arch a couple of times and I'm curious. Where did you take that photo from? And where is the light source on the arch coming from?

This is a composite of 28 photos that were 30 seconds each, so yes and no. You wouldn't get the detail or the color but if you took the picture down to just black and white it would look very similar,
