The NFL informed the Broncos Wednesday morning that quarterback Peyton Manning was named the AFC Offensive Player of the Week for his 462-yard, 7-TD effort in last Thursday’s 49-27 defeat of the Ravens.

No quarterback has thrown more than seven touchdowns in a game, and the last to reach seven was Minnesota’s Joe Knapp in 1969.

Wednesday marks the 24th time Manning has won a conference offensive player of the week nod, which passes Tom Brady for most all-time. Brady has 23, Dan Marino 18, Drew Brees and Brett Favre 16 and John Elway 15.

One month removed from Super Bowl glory, the Baltimore Ravens barely resemble the team that knocked off the San Franciso 49ers in the Superdome.

ESPN's Trey Wingo noted Thursday that Ed Reed's expected exodus to the Houston Texans will mark the eighth starter lost from last season's title team. No defending Super Bowl winner has shed more than five, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Keep in mind, Baltimore is a solid defense. If Broncos linebacker Danny Trevathan didn't have a bonehead play running an interception back and Decker didn't drop a number of passes the Broncos might have had more than 60 points.

FYP.

Im sure that losing the guys responsible for making the adjustments on defense in the secondary and front seven had nothing to do with that defensive meltdown, even if their names were only Ray Lewis and Ed Reed. Cary Williams is gone as wel as two more linebackers from that front 7.

Im sure the loss of Anquan Boldin (who tore shit up against GB) didn't affect the offense in any negative way whatsoever.

I admire your flexibility. Not too many people can get their foot in their mouth and their head up their ass all at the same time.

Props to you bro.

Bowser 09-11-2013 01:57 PM

Hey look, Kirwan is employing Vermeil logic!

"If we wouldn't have given up those two rushes of 68 and 79 yards, we would have held them to under 3.0 yards a rush!"

Don't like a source, so you just discount it. They could be a decent defense later in the year. They might be godawful. With so many new starters it's hard to say. Remember the Eagle "dream team"? That defense was supposed to be awesome.

Either way, I'm done with this line of discussion. I know you're not interested in an actual conversation so it's not worth my time.

Quesadilla Joe 09-11-2013 02:04 PM

All offseason all I heard was how terrible Lewis and Reed were and that Ozzie Newsome is some sort of genius for making the Ravens an even better team than they were last year.

I also heard that Denver was going to struggle because there is no way in hell that Denver could survive losing two centers and they certainly couldn't play well on defense without Von, Champ and Doom.

Nightfyre 09-11-2013 02:08 PM

Von Miller tops ATL's outside linebacker rankings

So far, we have ranked the top running backs and inside linebackers in the league. This week, we turn our attention to the NFL's best outside linebackers.

Top shelf: Von Miller, Clay Matthews, Aldon Smith

The challenge in ranking outside linebackers is that the 4-3 linebacker is off the line, plays more in space, has contain duties and is responsible for picking up running backs and tight ends in coverage, while the 3-4 linebacker primarily rushes the passer. Miller laughs at that dichotomy, combining the best traits of both schemes as the rare 4-3 linebacker who gets after quarterbacks and stuffs the run better than any 3-4 linebacker.

According to Pro Football Focus, the only linebacker within sniffing distance of Miller's combined 86 quarterback sacks, hits and hurries last season was Smith (72). How unique is Miller? No other 4-3 linebacker came within 50 of Miller's total. He's the dictionary definition of an NFL difference-maker.

Only a few more weeks until Von comes back :)
