The skater probably knew he was supposed to go outside, he started going outside, but his coach screamed inside and at the last moment he probably started to doubt himself and decided to trust his coach.

What made it more stupid was that even if his coach were right, he switched inside too late, he didnt even take the inside lane correctly. If he thinks his coach was wrong and its too late to change, then just go with it.

Sure didn't look like "he probably knew" it to me.

Ultimately, the athlete is the one that should be keeping track of that in his own mind. It's his responsibility. The best in the world shouldn't make a mistake like this, no matter how egregious the coach's error was.
