Its a combination of factors. Reduced ranged of motion is prob the biggest, leg press will focus more on quads depending on foot position and not so much the glutes & hip flexors, which are usually weak links for people. If you want to squat big weight, you need to work on glute accessory movements like glute bridges, glute-ham raise, reverse hypers and such. Leg press wont do dick for your squat. Hack squat machine is an OK accessory, if your going deep.
