Unless you're concerned about an injury that would force you into the open FA market for a replacement the following season, there isn't one.
For instance, I've kicked around the idea of signing both Fitz and Tannehill to 2 year deals. Year 1 doesn't matter but there's a good chance that Tannehill get injured or doesn't play enough to get a viable statline for the sim in season 2. In that event, I'll want to have Tannehill on hand already rather than be forced into going into FA for a QB or having to draft one in a draft that may/may not have a viable QB.
Then again, if Fitz gets a stopgap deal on a solid team trying to coach up a rookie and manages to make it through the season healthy (even if he gets benched by week 10 again), I'd have wasted that money I spent on Tannehill entirely.
Dunno what I'm gonna do there, to be honest. It'll depend on how much I have to spend. But the only reason you have a backup is the reason ANYONE has a backup - just in case.
