Not always. I wound up in the principals office at school on more than one occasion and had a close and personal meeting with the paddle. Usually 1-3 swats depending on whatever stupid crap I pulled on that given day. Personally I don't have a problem with this type of spanking as long as its not excessive. But what this guy gave his daughter IMO constitutes a beating, not simple punishment or a spanking.

Pychologists actually encourage parents who believe in corporal punishment to use something other than their hand. Kids see the hand as the parent while if we use something sensible, they'll dissociate the impliment. We use a wooden spoon around these parts. But I don't beat my kids with it. Couple swats usually does the trick.

I think the main thing is to show affection after you beat them. When I got spanked as a child, my parents would immediately feel bad and try to explain how they still love me and showed me affection. Of course by that time, I would have cried all the demons out and felt guilty for driving my parents to beating me. Everyone was better off after it. Good times.

My mom used to beat us (my sisters and me) with those green bamboo tomato garden stakes. They left welts and bruises. My dad would very rarely strike us. But my mom took it too far. What was OK back then (Mid 1960's) would cause Juvenile Services to show up now.

Beating and spanking or two different things. I'm shocked anyone would go near defending this beating even if they were spanked with a belt. I was and my parents are horrified that they ever did such a thing. They would have been in trouble with the law these days and those spankings weren't remotely as bad as this. Two or three swats. As I write that I cringe that they ever thought that was an acceptable practice.

I don't recall my parents ever striking me. But, that's probably because I've been concussed so frequently.

Since both my parents worked, I did have baby sitters who were redneck animals and illiterate farmers. The "granny" used to force me to go out into her yard and select my switch. I learned early on to choose the largest log I could find which inhibited her ability to wield the weapon effectively and didn't sting. I guarantee you that, in this day and age, she would be imprisoned ... if not for child abuse, certainly for stupidity.
