Yep, the threat was enough most of the time. Remove the threat, and it just doesn't work quite so well.

I lived with an aunt and uncle for a couple years, and he scared the crap out of me. He did and would whip us, so I never thought of doing anything out of line. "Kids were made to be seen and not heard."

Strongly disagree. It's yet another example of the natural tendency to present the good aspects of the side you are on and ignore those of the side you're against. For example, this is completely made up:

Quote:

Billy is more careful next time, grows up normal, goes to college and becomes a successful businessman.
Who knows what would happen to "Billy." He might have grown up normal. Or he might have grown up to be Ted Bundy.

On the other hand, there's this:

Quote:

Police called and SWAT team arrives -- they arrest both Johnny and Mark. They are both charged with assault and both expelled even though Johnny started it.
That's just stupid. Most towns don't even HAVE a SWAT team, and a vast majority of fights are handled with nothing more than in-school discipline.

The entire list is like that. You're looking at the IDEAL situation in 1957 and comparing it to the WORST-CASE scenario in 2011.

In 1961, I got in a real fight at recess. Both of us came back to the room with black eyes. No big deal, the teacher knew our parents would deal with us that night.

In 8th grade wood shop, our teacher, Mr. Atherton was well known for giving spats out in the hall with a wood paddle. You bent over and grabbed your ankles. You could hear it all over the school, and all the teachers knew it. No biggie.

For the record, I got in a fight in 1998. Neither I nor the guy I was up against was given any level of discipline, but both our parents were called, and my punishment at home was far worse than anything the school ever did.

And my 8th grade shop teacher was proud of his paddle as well. In 1996. I know that's pretty much been eliminated these days, but I don't buy all the "when I was your age" stuff.

And your argument is a perfect example of 21st century PCism, where your interepretation is entirely literal, black and white, of an illustration of a very gray shaded world, where you are required to use common sense to understand the freaking point, yet you are incapable.

No, my interpretation is that the list is intentionally slanted to make a point, which isn't entirely true. Is it based in some level of truth? Sure. But it's like taking a politician's speech and taking everything they say at face value rather than with a grain of salt.

HIGH SCHOOL -- 1957 vs. 2011
Scenario 1:
Jack goes quail hunting before school and then pulls into the school parking lot with his shotgun in his truck's gun rack..
1957 - Vice Principal comes over, looks at Jack's shotgun, goes to his car and gets his shotgun to show Jack.
2011 - School goes into lock down, FBI called, Jack hauled off to jail and never sees his truck or gun again. Counselors called in for traumatized students and teachers.

Scenario 2:
Johnny and Mark get into a fist fight after school.
1957 - Crowd gathers. Mark wins. Johnny and Mark shake hands and end up buddies.
2011 - Police called and SWAT team arrives -- they arrest both Johnny and Mark. They are both charged with assault and both expelled even though Johnny started it.

Scenario 3:
Jeffrey will not be still in class, he disrupts other students.
1957 - Jeffrey sent to the Principal's office and given a good paddling by the Principal. He then returns to class, sits still and does not disrupt class again.
2011 - Jeffrey is given huge doses of Ritalin. He becomes a zombie. He is then tested for ADD. The family gets extra money (SSI) from the government because Jeffrey has a disability.

Scenario 4:
Billy breaks a window in his neighbor's car and his Dad gives him a whipping with his belt.
1957 - Billy is more careful next time, grows up normal, goes to college and becomes a successful businessman..
2011 - Billy's dad is arrested for child abuse, Billy is removed to foster care and joins a gang. The state psychologist is told by Billy's sister that she remembers being abused herself and their dad goes to prison. Billy's mom has an affair with the psychologist.

Scenario 5:
Mark gets a headache and takes some aspirin to school.
1957 - Mark shares his aspirin with the Principal out on the smoking dock..
2011 - The police are called and Mark is expelled from school for drug violations. His car is then searched for drugs and weapons.

Scenario 6:
Pedro fails high school English.
1957 - Pedro goes to summer school, passes English and goes to college.
2011 - Pedro's cause is taken up by state. Newspaper articles appear nationally explaining that teaching English as a requirement for graduation is racist. ACLU files class action lawsuit against the state school system and Pedro's English teacher. English is then banned from core curriculum.. Pedro is given his diploma anyway but ends up mowing lawns for a living because he cannot speak English.

Scenario 7:
Johnny takes apart leftover firecrackers from the Fourth of July, puts them in a model airplane paint bottle and blows up a red ant bed.
1957 - Ants die.
2011 - ATF, Homeland Security and the FBI are all called. Johnny is charged with domestic terrorism. The FBI investigates his parents - and all siblings are removed from their home and all computers are confiscated. Johnny's dad is placed on a terror watch list and is never allowed to fly again.

Scenario 8:
Johnny falls while running during recess and scrapes his knee. He is found crying by his teacher, . Mary hugs him to comfort him.
1957 In a short time, Johnny feels better and goes on playing.
2011 - Mary is accused of being a sexual predator and loses her job. She faces 3 years in State Prison. Johnny undergoes 5 years of therapy.

I can definately remember in elementary during the 70s getting sent to the Principles office meant a spanking. Teachers would sometimes do it themselves in another room or closet somewhere.

No, the posting he was responding to was an entirely literal, black and white oversimplification of a shades of gray world. The idea that everything in America was better 50 years ago is sentimental bullshit.

They thought more critically in 1957.

The guy's a freakin moron. It would've taken 15 seconds for him to go get an usher and instead he did this and now he is going to jail. Deserves it.

Due to your history of violence, I'm afraid that we're going to have to let you go.

Wow, those both surprise me. Maybe it is a regional thing. Up here, the police would have been involved on both of those cases.

Did you not wear a helmet and knee pads when riding your bicycle either?
Did you play soccer or baseball?

No doubt, but a lot of it is true. It was more of a "rub some dirt on it" society.

'57 was about a decade early for my high school days, by then nobody would dare drive a car to school with a gun in it. The racial tension was at it's peak, and I went to Wichita East.

But I have no doubt it would have happened in '57, probably without issues.
