Looked up Spencer Patton and found the story below.

Quote:

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Former SIUE baseball pitcher Spencer Patton (Kinmundy, Ill.) has been promoted by the Kansas City Royals and will report to double-A Northwest Arkansas later this week.

"I'm definitely excited to get there and see what double-A is all about," Patton said. "I'm excited to be closer to home and have the chance to have family and friends see me play."

The right-hander began the 2013 season in Wilmington in the Carolina League. In 25 appearances (23 in relief) for the single-A club Patton was 5-2 with a 2.10 earned run average. In 64.1 innings, he piled up 76 strikeouts compared to just 20 walks, and has allowed only 49 hits.

"I've never pitched out of the bullpen in my life until now," Patton added. "For whatever reason the relief role suits me in pro ball."

Patton, who was drafted by the Royals in the 24th round of the 2011 Major League Baseball first year player draft, was the first SIUE player drafted since Clay Zavada in 2006. Zavada went on to make 49 Major League appearances.

Patton was 13-10 in his career in a Cougar uniform. He struck out 201 hitters in 172.2 innings, leaving him sixth in school history in career strikeouts. His career average of 10.48 strikeouts per nine innings is second best in a career.

For the Naturals, Spencer had a 1.50 ERA in 12 games, 18 innings with 27 SO.

After that weekend, I'm really looking forward to some baseball.

Come on fast spring training.

At this point, if we make no other moves then our opening day payroll will be about $94,150,000.

Last year it was a little under 82MM. So, as expected, DM's comment that our 2014 payroll would be about the same as last year was a bunch of hogwash.

Yeah. I was surprised that Guthrie was the 2nd highest contract for the Royals. That made me cringe a little, but on the other hand, Guthrie has been a solid pitcher, so it's a wash.

It will be interesting to see how the Royals will handle the arbitration eligible players.

That's just because they backloaded his deal. You have to look at contracts from an aav lens.

I suspect that the market for starting pitchers will now be figured out, as Tanaka is being posted to the MLB clubs.

Quote:

Pitcher Masahiro Tanaka is set to move to the Major League Baseball next season after his Japanese team, the Rakuten Eagles, announced Wednesday it was prepared to let him leave, reversing its earlier rejection.

Rakuten Eagles president Yozo Tachibana said during a news conference that the team has decided to release Tanaka through the posting system, paving the way for his departure. Tachibana said Tanaka's outstanding performance over the past seven years, including this season, meant he deserved to be allowed to move to the U.S.

I think I told you this -- but, my fiancée mentioned something about wanting to go to spring training and it was out of nowhere.

So, we will definitely be doing that one year for sure.

So now that posting is capped at 20M, would it be worth it to take a stab at a guy like tanaka? I mean, 6/56+20M seems pretty good if you get a guy like Darvish.

Nightfyre 12-26-2013 09:03 AM

I mean, just for arguments sake, let's say that it happened. You've basically just improved the window for 2014 and extended it through 2020.

2014
Shields
Tanaka
Guthrie
Vargas
Duffy

2015
Tanaka
Guthrie
Vargas
Duffy
Ventura

2016-2019
Tanaka
Ventura
Duffy (FA in 2018)
Zimmer
Vargas (FA in 2018)

Looks like he'll get much more/year than that.

But he probably is worth the money.
