This is how I had my chimney starter. This caused the fire with no coals inside. Just the heat going through the cookie sheets to the wood.

Wow... I've usually start mine on the grill grates. Otherwise I've started it on concrete. Whoathunk? Ugh!

You will be more cautious than ever now. I had a fire start out of a cigarette butt can. Everytime i thought i smelled smoke i would run around and check the decks. Glad you and your family are okay and the loss was minimal. RIP Pork Butt

Sorry, I don't think it's funny. It's not being "self serious." A Chiefsplanet member had a significant fire at his home. He can't live there anymore.

If this were some beloved member of this board, people cracking jokes right now wouldn't be accepted.

Inmem is a human being, a husband, a father. I think when someone suffers a tragedy - and the loss of a home to fire is tragedy in my book - you don't crack jokes.

JMO.

You realize he's trolled many people on here, so they probably don't think he'd be butthurt by a few (funny i may add) jokes, right??

Nailed that smoke ring.

Seriously doubt anyone is happy about what happened to the guy, I know I'm not... but good grief "a husband, a father, oh the humanity!"

I bet Inmem is keeping a better sense of humor about the situation than YOU are

Inmen is his sweet baboobq

Yes, hence the reason I said if he were some beloved member of this board, people would be reacting differently.

I'm not here to white knight for Inmem. I just think it's classless. I'd be saying the same thing if it was you in his position.

It's one thing to make jokes when it's a news story and no one knows the people involved. It's another thing entirely, IMO, when it's a member of our little community here.

We disagree. That's fine. I dropped it.

If I'm reading him correctly, he didn't start his coals/have burning coals in the chimney when the fire started - he had dumped the coals and then put the hot chimney on those cookie sheets.

I think you're correct. How I read it, too.

I had a spare coal stick in the bottom of my chimney starter once, then drop onto the deck once it burned down small enough to fit through the grate on the bottom. Found a baseball size hole in my deck the next morning. Lucky it wasn't worse I guess.

Good point.. Ugh... And yeah, I'm not sure I wouldn't think that setup wouldn't be fine. Hell, I guess I'm lucky, even when not near a concrete driveway/tailgate asphalt, I've set my dumped-coals started in the decorative rocks around the house.

I'm still stunned that cool-down setup didn't work.

KCUnited 07-24-2016 09:25 AM

I use a BGE on a wood deck at my condo. I cleared it with the HOA before I bought the place. That said, I never use a chimney out there, just those lighter squares. Takes longer to heat up, but the piece of mind is worth it.

cdcox 07-24-2016 09:44 AM

According to post 86 he had coals in the chimney on top of the cookie sheet resting on the deck.i think the coals brought the wood up to the ignition point but the fire just didn't become visible until after he dumped the coals into the smoker.

Coals in the chimney get incredibly hot. One time my chimney blew a chunk of concrete out of my driveway.

Good catch, didn't see this the first time through.

It's a miracle he hadn't burned his place down before yesterday using that method.

Correct, I dumped the coals and placed the starter back on the cookie sheets. Fire happened 2 hours after that.
