Amazing they can even have that rule. Surely someone realized the potential for this happening. How anyone would think it would be an acceptable outcome seems impossible.

Has happened many times before. Thought it would again tonight, but West was determined to finish it.

That is what I was thinking...the rule addendum that would allow the umps to call it and revert back to the previous inning was just added this year....

I've never heard of it. If this was September with two sub-.500 teams, I could see it going by without a big deal I guess. But StL will be in contention, KC is on life support, but not completely dead yet. This game could matter. And to take it from the leading team in the 9th? Can't believe they would allow that.

They've always gone back to the score of the previous inning if a game had to be called mid-inning. That's not new.

Exactly, tell the ground crew to wrap it up and let's go.

petegz28 05-31-2013 01:43 AM

grounds crew showing they were obviously told to take their sweet ass time and drag it out until it starts raining again

mnchiefsguy 05-31-2013 01:43 AM

Cardinals should be sanctioned, their grounds crew is clearly trying to delay the restart of the game....no hustle out of them at all.

According to both the radio and tv broadcast, this particular implementation of the rule involving suspending the game is new... I can think of no instance where a team lost a game in this manner, got a link to one?

I don't know about a team losing a game due to it, but when games are called due to rain (and they've passed the point of a complete game at 4.5 to 5 innings), they always revert back to the previous full completed inning. I've annoyingly lost stats that way in fantasy for like 15 years.

dmahurin 05-31-2013 01:51 AM

A grounds crew guy is literally using a towel to try and dry up water. What the hell are they doing?

duncan_idaho 05-31-2013 01:52 AM

Well, at least we've found something where the Royals folks dominate their St. Louis counterparts.

Why does the St. Louis crew have those awesome rolling spreaders like KC does?

I would be willing to bet that they do...but they are not using them on purpose, trying to drag this thing out. There is probably no rule that says that they have to be used...

Sweet, you've lost fantasy points off of normal rain called game. This isn't normal.

Reverting back to the last completed full inning is actually very normal when games are called due to rain.

The first pitch is often the best pitch a hitter will see in an AB. The greater problem is that Tejada isn't very good.

AussieChiefsFan 05-31-2013 02:08 AM

Ouch. Royals should have gotten a couple of more runs. Hopefully Holland will shut them down in the ninth.

Maybe, but statistically, very few hitters do their best going after the first pitch.

Glad that justice was served.

Found the article I remembered: http://blogs.thescore.com/mlb/2012/0...s-a-good-idea/

Quote:

The numbers suggest the first pitch is a great time to rake: hitters slug the first pitch at a high rate, much higher than other even counts. Swinging at the first pitch is also wise at it represents a high likelihood of seeing a fastball. Since the beginning of the 2011 season, 57% of the first pitches thrown to qualified hitters were fastballs. 53% of those pitches were in the zone. Fastball in the zone? Pull the trigger, friends.
