We are under a high wind warning like I've never seen this time of year. I've never seen one like this even for the normal spring season.

The warning actually says to "expect wind gusts in excess of 75mph" and "widespread power outages".

We're getting something similar in Colorado. The NWS says,

Wind in these areas (Denver and others) will blow 30 to 50 mph with gusts between 60 and 80 mph. Wind-prone places in and near the foothills may see gusts as strong as 100 mph, the NWS reports.

It looks like I should bring the lawn furniture indoors.

This may be an inland tropical storm. Not Derecho. Have not heard that term used.

Three years ago one of our barns jumped the tree row and landed in our back yard. Hopefully that doesn’t happen again. A 12 x 40 barn makes a hell of a crash!

Stay safe people!

They said last night that the damage will likely be nearly indistinguishable from a derecho. A derecho is an outflow boundary on a thunderstorm complex.

This is low pressure, sustained winds FED by an outflow boundary. They said we could have 80-100mph winds sustained for an hour.

This is actually setup WORSE than the August 2020 derecho for us.

htismaqe 12-15-2021 11:45 AM

Most of the schools in the area are letting out at noon.

This is honestly the first time I've ever seen this type of storm setup in December.

There was one south by a feedyard but I think they chased it into some wheat and got it out.

Here's a nugget for you amateur meteorologists:

There were 11 confirmed tornado reports in Iowa tonight.

There had been only 5 in December since they started keeping records in the late 19th century.

As of today, most of the storm surveys are complete for the December 15th outbreak. It's unbelievable.
  1. The entire event has been classified as a derecho. The first December derecho in the US anywhere ever.
  2. 43 confirmed tornadoes in Iowa. The previous record was 35 set in August 2014.
  3. 17 confirmed tornadoes EF2 strength or higher. The previous record was 16 set in June 1984.
  4. Record high non-thunderstorm winds including 4 sites that clocked non-thunderstorm wind speeds over 80mph.
  5. The Des Moines airport recorded a wind gust over 70mph. The highest non-thunderstorm gust ever recorded there.
  6. The first ever moderate risk of severe weather in Iowa in December.
  7. Record highs shattered in several towns. 4 towns recorded temperatures of 75 degrees or higher.
