Carlson Gorman Walker is fair trade value for Soto

I mean, all 3 of these scenarios seem fair in terms of value:

Winn Gorman Carlson Liberatore

Gorman Carlson Walker

Walker Carlson Liberatore Winn

"Fair value" when it comes to trading for Soto isn't a reality. They aren't going to trade him with the expectation that the team who acquires him is only going to have him for the remainder of his arbitration. And if your first proposed trade, without Walker, was "fair" then Soto would already be suiting up for the Cardinals because they reportedly already offered that.

I think Carlson's necessary to include in any trade and can see why the Cardinals wouldn't want to.

I'm also operating under the assumption that Soto would be in St. Louis for 2.5 years. And I still think they can offer a package that's better than any team out there with regards to prospects.

Problem right now is if Carlson is traded they don't have anyone healthy to play CF. Who they going to run out there Nootbar?

Why not put O'Neill out there? He's played some CF and is overall a good defender.

A Walkerless deal is/was already on the table and the Cardinals are seemingly slipping out of the Soto race and its looking more like the Padres will get him, possibly with Bell, with the Dodgers sitting there still aggressively upping their offer.

Well the latest is that the Cardinals still aren't offering up Walker in a deal and the Padres and making headway on acquiring Soto and Bell. The Cardinals aren't out of it but until they start getting serious about it and put Walker in the deal they are basically forfeiting negotiations.

They seem more interested in adding whatever mediocre pitching is left out there instead of Juan Soto. You got Quintana, do you want Wade Miley or Drew Smyly too?

I want Soto, but it’s a waste of assets unless they at least got more pitching. Otherwise, they’d have similar fates as they have the past 3 postseasons or worse.

James Wood is probably lagging well behind on lists compared to where his stock is internally. Passan wrote a column about Wood and Merrill and insider evaluators were saying they were both playing their way into top-25 level prospects. And Susana is basically the Padres version of Tink Hence.

Myers is making the same amount as Hosmer this year. If Hosmer veto's the deal and the Nats were only going to pay for the remainder of this year with the Padres picking up the rest, just send them Myers and be done, unless the Nationals truly wanted that bum ass Hosmer taking up a roster spot.

From everything that was reported on the Cardinals offer Carlson was on the table, but your top prospects like Walker weren't. So the Cardinals lost out on the best thing since Ted Williams over Jordan Walker. Better hope he doesnt flop.

The bottom line is the bottom line. They weren't going to pay Soto in 2 years so they were afraid to do it for a rental because they know they are cheap.

Yankees fixed their outfield defensive problems with Beni and Bader.

Yep they did quite well plus got Gallo completely out of there.

Allows them to DH Judge more to keep him fresh.

Conservative moves for pitching it is.

I was pleasantly surprised that Montgomery had another year of arbitration left rather than being a free agent after this season.

This is the first tradeline where I'm not pissed off or underwhelmed in quite awhile.

The Bader/Montgomery trade was good for both teams. I just wish Mo would have let his nuts drop and gotten Soto.

I don't think it was good for the Yankees at all.

They gave up a good middle rotation starter who has another year of team control for a CF that has plantar fasciitis, which impacts the biggest asset he has (his defense) while barely being able to be hit worth a damn.

Yeah I’m happy with the trades a well and didn’t feel like they gave up too much. Mostly just hoped for one of the bigger fish.

I suppose as opposed to a Lester/Happ it’s a slight upgrade, but kinda feels like instead of going from dating a 4 to a 5…when the goal is setting your standard to going balls deep in nothing lower then a 9.

I think you’re severely underestimating how good Montgomery is and how giving up Bader is probably the best move long term as it clears a way for Walker to play sooner.

Short of getting Soto, this is probably the best I would expect the Cardinals to do. And while I still disagree with the FO’s overall approach, I can’t be upset with what they did at the deadline.

Happ and Lester were both pitching below league replacement level before coming to STL. Quintana and Montgomery aren’t and are both having good seasons and peripherals to match their success.

They aren’t reclamation projects like Masterson, Happ, LeBlanc, Lester, Ross, etc.

How does offloading Bader get Walker a clearer path?

Carlson stays in CF and that opens a corner outfield spot for Walker.

He is supposed to start playing outfield in the minors soon.
