Our payroll is increasing every year but eventually you'd think we'd have to finally be willing to dish out the money to keep a star player. At $55 million for Gil Meche the Royals have the smallest largest contract in franchise history out of all 30 MLB teams. This seems like a concern going forward. We had a magical year this year but to replicate that success I think we're going to have to be willing to put out bigger contracts when necessary. If we can't afford to keep Gordon then we sure as hell aren't going to be able to keep Moustakas or Hosmer.

Not sure it's that simple, and it's definitely a huge risk to wait... but I'm not sure you can sign every single guy to a huge deal. Problem with having such a deep team. Moose and Hos are on the right side of 30 too. If you give those guys plus Cain and Gordon money that could be nearly four $100M contracts. You're talking 60-80 million in payroll to 4 guys. And no one on the internet has even mentioned Wade yet. If he pitches half as good as the last two years he's about to get the greatest reliever contract of all time.

Although personally, I think it just comes down to Gordon's age, but they won't say that.

Yeah, I'm about ready for the other shoe to drop at this point so we get it over with. It's going to be a PR blow, but then we can move on to signing someone else. I hope. Everyone is waiting on Heyward.

Why does he even post these? Thanks Andy for the breaking news. With several bidders the math odds are by nature against him returning.

I'd like to know what the trade market looks like for Davis.

A front line starter for Marcell Ozuna? Are they serious?

Not the time to move him, IMO. You're not going to get a MLB-ready piece that makes a difference for a contending club.

The return for Chapman was Grant Holmes and Jose Peraza, reportedly. That's a good return for one year of a similar closer, but it's not something a team in contention mode is probably willing to do.

It's not about affording Gordon. It's about the deal making sense for us

I feel like the pendulum has swung, and teams are over valuing closers. Nobody is ever untouchable. Without Davis, we've still got a strong pen. We also have glaring holes at 2B and in the outfield. Our lineup is pretty terrible right now.

Because people ask him those questions all day long.

I dont know. After watching the Royals make a living off of relief pitching and closers in the playoffs I appreciate Wade even more.
