Absolutely, and that's been a knock against him ever since he declared.

But if you have proper coaching, there is no such thing as a "tweener" -- he can gain (or lose) weight to better fit a position, or a savvy coach can work him into their scheme.

The way Ortiz is built, a fairly-solid 6'2", 250+, he's only a DE in two schemes: (1) rotation guy in a Cover 2, or (2) situational pass rushing in a standard 4-3. I like him a lot better in (2), considering that pinning his ears back and getting sheer penetration was his specialty at TCU.

He could develop into a decent OLB in a 3-4, especially if his job responsibility is pass rushing. Again, if Ortiz makes it in the NFL, that's how he's doing it. But I don't think he has the speed to hold down the position, so I'd say he projects to a standard 4-3 team that needs a Elvis Dumervil type pass rusher.

I'm an Ortiz fan as well but do you take him as an under-athletic rush LB or as an under-sized DE? Then again it is the sixth round now.

Spicy McHaggis 04-13-2008 02:08 PM

So your reply might have been a bit more thought out than mine but I think we're on the same page, Shun.

I think so.

Knock on Ortiz is that I don't think he can add much more to his frame. I think he's maxed out and if he's going to make it in the NFL, I think it's as an undersized DE in obvious pass situations.

D, Keglar went in the 5th to the Texans.

D'oh.

1. QB Dennis Dixon (Oregon)
2. SS Jamie Silva (Boston College)
3. C Cody Wallace (Texas A&M)
4. RB Justin Forsett (California)
5. OG Donald Thomas (Connecticut)
6. WR Kevin Robinson (Utah State)
7. DE/OLB Chase Ortiz (TCU)
8. TE Jacob Tamme (Kentucky)
9. CB Darnell Terrell (Missouri)
10. DE Johnny Dingle (West Virginia)

Direckshun 04-13-2008 03:47 PM

Alright, let's look at the Rams while we're waiting for BCF.

1. DT Glenn Dorsey
2. OT Sam Baker
3. WR Andre Caldwell
4. C Mike Pollack
5. OG/OT Kirk Barton
6. CB/S Michael Grant
6. ...

I think the Rams' most outstanding need is still passrushing. They will be strong as hell in the middle but that doesn't always translate to strong passrushing. And as discussed already, the Rams are thin at DE.

I think they have to go there for this pick. There is a trio of solid guys on the board: the undersized passrushing specialist Chase Ortiz from TCU, West Virginia's Johnny Dingle whose one year of production showcased what could be starter-quality ability, and Iowa's workhorse Ken Iwebema, a jack-of-all trades DE who's tough as nails.

My pick would be Dingle, simply because the Rams need more than what they would get from Ortiz. If they were in need of a specialist I'd opt for Ortiz, but they're in need of a guy who can take a lot of snaps, and Dingle seems to be the most promising, although Iwebema would be the smart pick. Iwebema may never be a star in the NFL but his toughness and refusal to get run over would be a perfect compliment to a Dorsey/Carriker DT corps. The Rams routinely surrender insane rushing numbers, but with Iwebema that could be a thing of the past.

I'm tempted to draft Phobia because of all his bluster about his ability playing two-hand touch and how there wasn't a difference between the pros and joes other than the opportunities afforded them.

I think he could be a sleeper. And Dane McCloud runs a 4.5 40, so I might go after him, too.

I would stay away from Mecca, he has career backup/CFL player written all over him. :D

Eh, Community Skeptics are a dime a dozen.

You can pick up a high quality CS in the later rounds.

Bowser 04-13-2008 08:17 PM

Phobia himself would tell you that he's lost his burst.

Direckshun 04-13-2008 09:16 PM

I'm mocking the next several picks that lead up to me, mainly because the Compassion Forum is incredibly dull.

Yes, this is a mock mock:

171 RAMS (BigChiefFan) DE Johnny Dengle, West Virginia
172 PANTHERS (Chiefscafan) TE Jacob Tamme, Kentucky
173 VIKINGS (Hamas Jenkins) DE Chase Ortiz, TCU
174 BRONCOS (sfeihc) C Cody Wallace, Texas A&M

Direckshun 04-13-2008 09:29 PM

And one other thing -- OTW joshed me around earlier in the thread for not coming up with a better first four rounds than Mecca has for the Chiefs.

With the available talent, here's how I would have drafted for the Chiefs so far:

1. DT Sedrick Ellis, USC
2. WR Devin Thomas, Michigan State
3. OG Roy Schuening, Oregon State
4. CB Trae Williams, USF
5. same as Mecca
5. " " "
6. " " "

I've loved his late round picks so far, and his early round picks weren't poor as much as they were very different from what I would have done.

ChiefsCountry 04-13-2008 10:04 PM

Here is how I would have done the Chiefs in our mock:

1. Same
2. Devin Thomas, WR Michigan State
3. Eric Young, G Tennessee
4. Trae Williams, CB USF
5. Barry Richardson, T Clemson
5. Dwight Lowery, CB San Jose State
6. Same
