Why are you saying that? Did Alex say something?

That was the thinking by a lot of Royals fans, that whatever his value on the open market was, he'd take a little bit less if it meant staying in KC.

suzzer99 12-10-2015 07:25 PM

Assuming he'd take $100k less to stay in KC. And assuming he wouldn't take $20M less.

Now - where in the middle would he accept?

Eibner in 2016 & Starling in 2017.

Oh yeah, that's fair. Those numbers were speculation/projections from baseball columnists iirc.

It was fair for both sides. Alex turned 1 good year into 4/38. The first two arb years would've probably netted him 4&6. He ended up getting 9&9, and then he had 2 more guranteed afterward. Remember too that he got a player option for 2016 at $12.5m. All told if he sucked, he was looking at $50M in guaranteed money.

He ended up better off in FA too. Had he signed after 2013 he was probably looking 6/80. Revenues exploded since and now he's in line for way more.

As a player he possesses a well rounded skill-set that makes him a useful ballplayer on any team. You're advocating for a contract that would make him the cornerstone player of a contender.

He ain't that and unless he completely re-works his swing, he never will be.

Just staring googly eyed at pretty WAR numbers isn't going to get you very far. He racks up DWAR playing a secondary defensive position. He doesn't produce runs and his contributions on offense are both erratic and generally able to be neutralized given a fairly easy plan (pitch him in).

He's not 'brilliant'. He's not a superstar. And if you want to give all glory to WAR here, he's not even as good as Kevin Kiermaier. He's just a nice ballplayer that's about to be grossly overpaid.

So basically the only thing he has over Gordon is age? Is that really worth $100mil extra?

I assume you're simply asking a rhetorical question, and you already know the answer is "no".

DJ's analysis, as usual, is spot on. I think Zeke must be Jason Heyward's brother. He is not worth $200,000,000. Not even close. That's the kind of contract poorly-run teams sign and well-run teams avoid.

Yes. Because you are getting his prime WAR years.
