Bump for happy reasons: According to Newstalk KZRG 1310 Extreme Home Makeover wants to rebuild a house destroyed in Joplin.

Sadly.... those shows are a lot more about making a profitable TV series than they are about helping out families in need. They throw up homes quickly and expensively, and their timeline is much more important than build quality. Which creates all sorts of issues down the road. The families they help couldn't afford their last home, and throwing them in a bigger home with shoddy construction is rarely a good combination.

Cunningham Park is located in Joplin, MO right across from St. John’s Hospital and was one of Joplin’s best parks. This park was destroyed and leveled by the May 22nd tornado. Cunningham Park became Joplin’s first city park in 1892 so not only is it important to the community to restore the park for our enjoyment, but the park is a huge piece of Joplin history that cannot be forgotten. 159 were killed, thousands were injured and 1/3 of the city was totally destroyed by this F5 tornado. The tornado is said to have the highest dollar amount of insurance claim payouts in Missouri history. Clean up is expensive, FEMA doesn't cover it all, the city only has so many resources to pull funds from for the city's restoration. We need all the help possible to ensure that this park is restored back to the wonderful park it was (or even better) so that our children can have something beautiful to enjoy again and so that our history is retained.

Here’s how you can help:

Coca-Cola is having a contest to vote for your favorite park. They're giving away prizes to the top 3 parks. 1st Place wins $100,000, 2nd Place wins $50,000 and 3rd Place wins $25,000. You can vote over and over again, back to back, as many times as you want. As of the moment I'm writing this we are in 4th place. Voting ends September 6th so we have enough time to take 1st place if we spread the word and vote as much as possible.

Please vote for Joplin’s Cunningham Park (zip code 64804) and help us win $100,000 towards restoring our beautiful park by continually voting for us until it comes to an end.

Forward this email to your home email address so you can check out the links later, also forward this email to everyone you know so that we can work our way up to #1 and hold it until the end.

There's a facebook page you can like so that you can get status updates to remind you to vote. They also hold “voting marathons” and “power hours” that are great to join in on. http://www.facebook.com/pages/Coca-C...53812004645715

Here’s the direct link to Coca-Cola's voting site. Joplin's zip code is 64804 or you can search for Cunningham Park. http://www.livepositively.com/#/americasparks/vote

My friends and I took down two fully loaded U-Hauls about a week after the disaster. We took plenty of pics and made a bunch of new friends. Lemme know if this link works or not.

It is barely in 4th place now, but moving up the ranks quickly. It should be 3rd place by the end of the day.

It works. Very cool of you to pitch in like that.

gblowfish 07-27-2011 03:00 PM

Coca Cola should end this contest and split the money between Joplin and Tuscaloosa, AL.

Actually, I was blessed to be in on the action. It was great fun and a roller coaster of emotion. One three year old would tell me how brave he was when their car was lifted in the air, another 40 year old business owner would break down and cry when he told us how he lost his house.
