Nelson looks promising this year as well. Not much should be expected from the rookies IMO but they're our 4th CB and beyond. And name a team who has three above average safeties please. |

Dan Sorensen doing a John Lynch impression in a "live" 11-on-11 session. Three consecutive big hits, including the biggest of camp 2m |

The facepalm was because I believe Hill would be doing this at any camp. You look at Redskins camp for example, and you see Desean Jackson destroying Norman and Breeland, a really good CB duo. Guys with elite speed and quickness are really going to shine in 1 on 1's and on the practice field in general. |
Tyreek Hill looks like a DeSean Jackson clone. It's gonna be awesome seeing him on the field with Jamaal.

Another deep ball completion to Tyreek Hill, this time from Alex Smith. CBs having a devil of a time covering him.

Few people have compared Hill to Antonio Brown.

Sorensen just hurt Davis. He unleashed the biggest hit of camp on him. I still remember his hit on Emmanuel Sanders last year.

I'm not even sure that's accurate though. I see his game being more Desmond Trufant of Atlanta. I like Talib as a corner but Peters seemed much quicker and instinctive to me where Talib has always been physicality and Technique. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Alright, I went to practice yesterday, and here are my quick hit thoughts:
1. Alex Smith is by far the best QB of camp. Looked like his usual conservative but effective self. Passes were on money. Bray is by far the 2nd best QB of practice. Murray and Hogan look pretty good. Foles looked like hot garbage most of the practice. Not entirely his fault as some of the routes were timing routes but he just wasn't very good at all. Last couple of passes were beauts, though. 2. Still really like Darrin Reaves. Knile Davis looked rough all day so I say we just cut him and put Reaves in as the #4. 3. The Ross Travis hype is real. Dude is very athletic with great hands. Runs pretty good routes. Needs to get thicker but he was the 2nd best TE out there yesterday. O'Shaughnessy looked solid, so maybe we carry 4 TEs again? Brian Parker dropped three passes, two of which were gimmes. He won't survive the first round of cuts. 4. Both tackles struggled, problematic. Fisher in particular gave up a sack to Frank ****ing Zombo. Yikes. They rotated Ehringer and Fulton at LG, not sure why. Maybe they're rethinking the rook. 5. Jaye Howard is poised for a Pro Bowl season. Dude is a noise maker and he is everywhere. Great against the run and pass. Chris Jones didn't really make much of an impact... 6. 2nd best ILB all day was Justin March. Guy looks fast, excellent in the coverage drills, and plays very aggressive. Mauga was out today and they played Ramik Wilson with the 1s, though. 7. Not much to report on the secondary. Gaines looked solid, but gave up some passes. Peters of course looks amazing. Nelson turned in a stellar practice at NCB. Contested everything. 8. Albert Wilson was out today, and Chris Conley is clearly not up to the task as the #2, at least as of the practice I saw. He was not getting separation, and lost a jump ball against Nelson that he should have won. Streater, for this practice, was worthless. Only got one pass thrown his way all practice and it was broken up. Same with DeAnthony. Mike Williams played okay with the 2s, and Demarcus Robinson will probably need a season or two, though you can tell the potential is there. 9. The hype on Tyreek hill is legit. Guy is obviously fast, but he gets so much separation. Had the best TD of the practice -- Smith hit him across the middle about 15 yards down the field, nobody around him. He was in stride towards the far side of the field, stops running on a dime, does a 180, and outsprints everybody to the nearside pylon. Gaines is a 4.3 runner and couldn't catch the damn dude. Hill was the 2nd best WR of practice. 10. Funniest moment of practice was during the coverage drills. DJ was on Charcandrick West, who juked a route to the middle. DJ bit on it, hard, and West stood all by himself on the sideline and reeled in the pass. Jogging back to the crowd, DJ hears coach Bieniemy yell at him "DJ you gonna play receiver for us too?" |

Of course it's a position that's a question mark. I also remember a bunch of people who shit on the Smith signing . In today's game, every team could stand to have a better secondary because it's become so pass heavy with the rules changes significantly favoring the offense. My bigger concern is if Sutton doesn't have the exact personnel to run his scheme how he ideally likes to, is he creative and resourceful enough to recognize how to adjust to take advantage of our talent and minimize exposing our weaknesses? He's shown if given exactly what guys he wants he can having the defense humming and playing great. He hasn't been tremendous at shifting on the fly to fix things when having to make do. In the league, injuries, FA, and cap space require everyone to adjust for the inevitable. This roster has had major turnover and the talent 1 to 53 is leaps and bounds better; and has done so year over year since Dorsey has arrived. You hope they're not going into the season faced with a DB situation like we ended up with during the GB game. If they weren't able to scout and find new talent in the offseason it's going to be painful to see a repeat of that. Losing Smith aside, I think there's much better talent as an overall unit, with less drop-off, even if your starters aren't guaranteed shutdown guys. The DL and LBs should be outstanding, and their ability to bring pressure should bolster the secondary's ability to do their job. TC isn't going to be a great indication of how good the coverage may or may not be given so many of the drills won't mirror live game scenarios and already favor the offense. |
To be fair to Sutton, we ended 2014 with the 2nd best secondary despite losing Berry to cancer and Marcus Cooper early on to bad play.
We went the entire season with no #2 CB and the second half of the season with no Berry and still had the 2nd best secondary in the league, playing a slate of very tough QBs. Gaines does not look hobbled at all, looks completely fresh out there. The one practice I saw, Steven Nelson looked excellent at nickel. |
Thanks for the update direk.
I'm more optimistic about this secondary. They've got alot of talent there, may be rough early, but hopefully they get together. Im guessing they play a little more passive early and give up some more stuff hoping the front 7 can get home. |
