KANSAS CITY -- The Kansas City Royals today announced they have reached an agreement with fourth-round draft choice Tim Melville. Consistent with team policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

"We are very pleased to announce the signing of Tim Melville. Tim, his family, and advisor Jason Cook remained committed to this process from start to finish," said Deric Ladnier, Royals Senior Director of Scouting. "Tim is a very talented young man and we are excited that we were able to add a player of his caliber to the Royals organization."

Melville is the 2007 Aflac National High School Player of the Year recipient. The 6'5" right-hander from Wentzville, Mo. finished his senior campaign with an 8-1 record, a 2.56 ERA, and 89 strikeouts in 52 innings. As a junior, Melville compiled a 10-1 mark with a 0.89 ERA which helped Holt High School reach the Missouri Class 4-A finals.

We have until 11pm cst to sign Hosmer and Ryan Curl...glad we got Mellville, considered at the 15th slot in the 1st round but dropped due to signability issues.

Sweet. Now get Hosmer signed dammit.

Hosmer has to get signed for this to signal that the Royals really have changed. I'm not going to be happy if Melville was a fall-back plan. I don't think he was, but I'm just sayin'.

Agreed...we need to sign him, why draft a guy that high and not sign him....last i heard it wasn't going well, but it could change minutes to the deadline.

I guess it's possible that the kid just flat out refuses to sign. If so, there's probably not much one could do.

If, however, the Royals don't sign him because of a mil. or two, David Glass should be nuthooked immediately. What's the point of spending so much time and effort to scout and select the kid? You either think he's the real deal or you don't, and it's a lot cheaper to get top talent through the draft than FA.

No doubt. Guess it comes down to if you believe in your scouts or not. If you sign him, giving him this kind of money, and he sucks, some people will need to lose their jobs.

Personally, 4? 6? 7? I don't give a ****. Not my money. KC drafted him, and this organization CANNOT afford to miss an opportunity to add young talent to the system.

Can you imagine the balls it would take to turn down $4 million? That just seems like insanity to me.

DeezNutz 08-15-2008 10:42 AM

Tough to improve much from #3 overall...

If he just doesn't want to play for KC? Ok. But good teams don't usually draft high. Would it be better to go to, say, the Nationals?

He won't. The problem for the HS kids is that they have absolutely no barganing position at all. Hosmer has a .00000000000000001% chance of improving his draft stock by going back to college and a 50-60% chance of hurting it. This deal will be exactly like Moustakas last year where we get it done 10 minutes before the deadline and everyone is happy.

gblowfish 08-15-2008 10:54 AM

Start him tonight in Yankee Stadium. Might as well let him suck now, just like all our other starters.

Mama Hip Rockets 08-15-2008 11:38 AM

now get barry bonds signed.

wait, that was a couple months ago, never mind.

Demonpenz 08-15-2008 11:38 AM

If he doesn't sign we do get an extra number 1 next year if the price isn't right I would go that route
