Speech Impediments?

The missus and I got into a debate about speech impediments. I believe that an adult that is fully capable of hearing and has no physical problems with their mouth should be able to overcome a speech impediment. Take those European actors that speak a role in an american accent, or american actors that speak a role in foreign accents.... it's done on purpose, right?

Assuming the adult has no physical impairments, I don't think that a speech impediment should be that hard to overcome. I think it's a choice.

FTR, I'm talking about those that say, "dowwa bill", "mawaige", or slurs, or has those annoying "sssss" when they say words with and "s" in it, or talks like Daffy Duck or Elmer Fudd.

Am I the only one that thinks this?

As one who had a speech impediment when I was a kid, I know its pretty hard to overcome. Even now I will have occassional trouble. I think it does have to be dealt with when one is a child or it becomes habit.

Speech impediments are discrete from accent issues or language disorders.

I had a strong lisp when I was a kid that was corrected through speech therapy.

I still have a strong case of dork voice though. I don't think that would be easy to cure because I don't know that I have it until I hear myself recorded.

Had speech therapy 12 years ago to correct a lisp by changing where my tongue "rests" in my mouth. Now I have trouble with 'r' consonants following 'w' or 'l' consonants, changing the intended order of a spoken sentence, and on one occasion I repeated the same sentence over-and-over again until prompted to stop. Don't think that this is connected to the conscious creation of sound in your nose, mouth, and throat.

Nah...

I lean heavily to the side of, "You're a dick."

I know nothing about this, but it seems feasible to me that a person could have some weird issue with neurology or have a malformed tongue muscle or lip muscle that could prevent "normal" speech.

I must admit that I do find it a little odd to run across an adult who can't pronounce certain letters, but I figure there must be some reason that they can't fix it.

A lot of it is muscle memory and mechanics and those are difficult and take time, therapy and practice to hopefully retrain.
